Thursday, August 22: Winterlong, “Sky Travellers”
Winterlong was designed from the outset as Thorbjorn Englund’s solo project, so all the lineup changes never mattered much. “Sky Travellers” laid down the template: Englund shredded and attempted a mix of growling and wailing over prototypical power metal drumming. This was power metal from the Malmsteen-influenced wing, as opposed to the Priest/Maiden style favored by most associated with the sound, and Englund’s noodling found some favor among followers of that particular style of playing. Englund was clearly more interested in playing than singing, which explained why “Sky Travellers” didn’t really have much in the way of verses or choruses and ended with a solo. It also explained why Winterlong didn’t really take off as a working band, since Englund retired the name after 4 albums and briefly joined Sabaton.
I waited for you, Winterlong You seem to be where I belong.

The first of the tribute albums. It'd be awesome if this was a great record, but it's not. It's OK. But props for inventing shit, you know?
