Through the Worst of Winter Storm Knife
To say our volunteers are the best is an understatement. When this storm was being spoken about this past Monday; it sounded as if it could be pretty bad snow, if not more than the normal amount. No one thought the 84+ inches that fell in parts of the South Towns in a few day span would be the actual turn this storm would take.
Tuesday rolls around, and our WNY region gets clobbered. Absolutely wrecked with snow. You've seen the photos; and if you haven't, this is probably the one that speaks the biggest volumes of the "wall" that cut through Buffalo like a knife; hence, "Winter Storm Knife".
People were snowed in for days, quite honestly, as this is written, people are still snowed in. Plows were getting stuck. Snowmobiles were being deployed for different medical emergencies, and local mayors and leaders were bickering at each other about different ways snow should be removed.
You know who didn't falter, who didn't stay home because they couldn't get out? The volunteers of Hearts for the Homeless who go out to feed the chronically poor and homeless.
Our volunteers went out Tuesday night, and fed 37 people who needed the help. They went out Wednesday night, and fed 37 more. They again came to help those in need last night (Thursday) and fed 32 mouths. They'll go out tonight (Friday) and they'll go out again tomorrow (Saturday). Our volunteers will not let the snow or bitter cold, or anything else keep them from showing up to deliver the food that these folks on the street need. They've taken coats to hand out, they've taken gloves, and they'll take boots now that the weather is turning.
Simply put - our volunteers are amazing.
Thank you.

This should explain the phenomenon that is “lake effect snow.” For the record, the city itself only has a few inches – it is the surrounding areas that get the snow, but Buffalo gets the reputation :/
Buffalonians ARE used to this much snow - in a year! The Buffalo area has gotten more than one year’s worth of snow in less than three days’ time. There isn’t time to clear the roads at all, so the whole area is pretty much shut down. And now there is a gas crisis affecting the emergency vehicles and also plows that are supposed to be clearing the roads. It is just a waiting game until it all melts when it gets up to 60 this weekend (and floods).
