Buffalo will have a downtown movie theatre again! Hooray!!!
“There’s this whole new energy in downtown between new workers and people living here, or just exploring what’s happening in the central business district,” said Michael Schmand, Buffalo Place Inc. executive director. “Restaurants are seeing this as an opportunity.”

At one point during her 13-hour ordeal, Karen Rossi got out a pen and paper and wrote farewell letters to her two daughters...
Although she was wet, cold and exhausted, she continued to climb out the window, crawl her way up and wave the red snow brush out of the hole in the snowbank, hoping it would attract someone’s attention. Finally, it did…
“I see you, I’m going to get you out,” a man’s voice yelled out. “I have a shovel.”
I have never ever experienced anywhere else the camaraderie and mutual helpfulness that is a near universal effect of a Buffalo snowstorm. People pull together and help each other to solve problems, no questions asked. Look around and think about that. Maybe the rest of the world could benefit from some more snow.

A women's basketball team stranded on a bus for more than a day during a massive snowstorm in upstate New York turned to social media to keep morale up.
Talk about team bonding!!!
Engulfed in snow, Buffalo shows resilience
Buffalo’s impressive lake effect storm has made national attention this week. Articles like the one above by The Boston Globe help people understand why Buffalo is nicknamed “The City of Good Neighbors.” While the storm has been deadly with significant property damage there has been an overwhelming feeling of positivity by residents who are working together to help those in need. The article also mentions how New England would have lost power with only a fraction of the snowfall that largely kept Buffalo’s snowbound areas warm and lit. It also spends a significant time talking about Buffalo’s current renaissance, including such big ticket projects as the new Solar City plant and Terry Pegula’s Harborcenter.
As Buffalo continues its effort to rebrand itself this snow-covered national image is one which Charlie Fashana of Hello Hertel calls “a PR nightmare" for the region. Yet, with each new lake effect storm that covers the city articles akin to The Boston Globe’s repeatedly recognize Buffalo’s resilience and friendliness. Actually, Buffalo is conspicuously absent on the Farmer’s Almanacs “worst winter weather cities” list unlike Detroit and Cleveland. The fact that Buffalo is on the eastern end of a Great Lake gives the city warmer winters compared to other northern cities such as Duluth, MN or Casper, WY. While Buffalo does not give the year-round feeling of summer associated with the sun-belt it also doesn’t suffer from the increasing drought creeping across the US that is most recently affecting 30% of the nation.
Boston says they would have lost power with this snow! Go Buffalo! Okay power was out in Eden for about an hour but we won't count it!
It takes a village...

I’m so beyond proud to be where I’m from. It may be biased coming from me, but I’ve heard it from many non-Buffalonians, we are a tough city. We can take anything, and make the best of it. Not only that, but we are the city of good neighbors, we will go out of the way to help anybody. I love Buffalo.

While the national spotlight is currently on Buffalo, as we have a natural disaster of the sorts only this region could have, their focus is almost solely on the snow, and the impact of the snow on the region’s ability to go about our daily lives.
