The next train car: the ice cream cone! This was very clearly supposed to be modeled after an ice cream cone, but I wanted to expand the theme a little bit, instead of just making this a different colored cone. So I repainted the waffle cone to look like a wooden lattice, and the ice cream to a snowy mountain! I really like how the blue micro glitter adds nice icy shading under the thicker holo-type flakes! I originally planned to use a Whipple type fake icing, but ultimately I feared it might be too much for the already busy paint job. I took a lot of pictures of my Christmas train project, because there’s a loooot of detail on each piece! And for fun, I am showing each one next to a stock, unpainted train, so you can see what changes I made! I tried to work with the existing colors, partly to save on potential scuffs, and partly to challenge myself! All of the swirly details are sculpted on; I tried to highlight them by adding paint! If you’ve been following me for years on Tumblr, you might have seen this WIP many years ago! (Definitely pre-pandemic, so maybe closer to five years now... eek!) Every Christmas, I want to return to my idea of the Christmas Train, and every year I get distracted or run out of time. It’s a lot of very fine detail work, and the white I was using required A LOT of layers, and I got frustrated with how blobby it looked close up. But now I have better white paint, smaller brushes, and I’m maybe? Possibly? Okay the blue train on the #winterycollab2022 project is... well it’s the strugglebus car. Because I thought, oh! Metallics! Silver will look SO GOOD against the blue! So I slathered on some nice shiny silver (top right) and let it dry... and it turned into bottom left. Aka, not cute, not opaque in the least, and with the leftover failed purple paint in the crannies, just kinda looked dirty. So on @dolly_lolly_playtime ‘s suggestion, I’m gonna try gold instead... BUT gold is equally transparent! So in lieu of doing 300 layers and ending up with chunks, we are gonna try a base coat of my new miniature paint first, which in the bottle looks like a nice tan, and now the train has become... Mac n cheese. Everyone has mac n cheese at Christmas, right?!!
