the wip hype squad is a community for original fiction writers spoiled by fandom. are you ready to write but miss your beta more than your ex? come join us! our squad is the rarest of writers — we like hearing about original work.

what the wip hype squad does:

members connect with other members to find writing collaborators or cohorts to get them through the journey.

here are some ways to know if being a squad member is right for you:

you’re writing an original work of fiction

you really, really, really want to finish it

you’re deep in the planning, drafting, or editing phase

you have a tumblr where you post about original work

you want to be able to tag posts so other people can see them

you’re active in fandom and find writing alone isolating

you are motivated by interactions with others

you enjoy motivating others to complete their goals

you’re genuinely interested in hearing about others’ writing

COMMUNICATE

use #wiphypesquad and the ask box as your place to:

#buildcommunity: posts that ask about other members' personal experiences, favorite fandoms, and likes and dislikes will be filed under this tag

#callforhype: when you're feeling down about your work, feel free to vent — and when you're feeling good or want to help, send out positive messages to the squad

#askthesquad: got a question about the writing process? or do you wanna know if anyone else does this writerly thing that you do? ask the squad!

#canigeta: these asks are specific requests for feedback, co-writers, tools, software, or other resources

#canireca: couldn't imagine writing without this book/blog/tool/software/lifestyle choice? these kinds of posts will be tagged like so

SHARE & CARE

how much we all get out of the community depends on how much we all put in. coming from fandom, a lot of us are used to creating writing aids and posting snippets for positive reinforecement. when you're scrolling through the tag or blog, give those like, reply, and reblog buttons a workout! 

feel free to tag your creations #wiphypesquad but limit the length of your excerpts. your collaborator or cohort is the person to send full-length chapters. if you're creating a lot of visuals or mixes, tagging them is great! but also consider talking about how you use these kinds of writing aids and how you make them. basically, think about how you might engage the whole squad when you post. weekly the blog will ask for "shares" so squad members can link to or post meta, moodboards, mixes, excerpts, etc. look out for those! send an ask to the mods if you have an idea for a share.

squad goals: who can hype

SQUAD MEMBERS

squad members are writers who have:

committed to writing an original fiction work (usually a novel)

honed their craft via fandom writing and want to celebrate that

promised to be an active part of a community, cohort, or collaboration

submitted a profile by answering every question on this google form application

the benefit of being a squad member is getting your own profile and squad member tag so that people can more easily find you and your work. it helps us build community better if we know who our regular posters are.

HYPE BOOSTERS

if you're not quite ready to commit to a membership, your participation is still very welcome. follow the blog, browse the tag, offer resources, become a co — if you're into original fiction writing, we're into you.

CO-WRITERS

while we hope the larger community will fill the fandom void, it's always amazing when you can connect with someone or multiple someones willing to learn about your project, critique your plots and writing, and motivate you to meet your goals. 

that's what coes are for!

collaborators: writing buddies, plotting partners, betas, whatever you want to call them, these are your go-to people. find them. cherish them.

cohorts: a handful of squad members are all writing about mythological creatures in space? what a coincidence! you all should probably form a cohort. make your own tag, start an email chain, however the spirit moves you.

THE POINT

escape the void of original fiction. the wip hype squad is a community network of fic writers who are committed to finishing original works but miss the connectedness that comes with fandom. squad members and hype boosters use the tag #wiphypesquad in place of fandom tags so other members and boosters can drop encouraging notes on their progress, get inspiration from their process, ask questions, request feedback, and find a writing collaborator or cohort.

THE CONCEPT

the idea for the wip hype squad was born from whining — writing original fiction is so much harderthan writing fanfic. setting aside having to build your own sandbox and actually complete a story arc, there's the isolation. no one to swoon over characters with. no one to torture with angsty headcanons. just you alone with your obsession. because the general consensus is that no one cares about original work as it's being written (or maybe ever). and you're bothering people by even bringing it up — moreso if you're the kind of writer who gets new ideas every week. but! while some people would rather jump into the sun than hear the details of a wip, some of us hardcore story obessives actually love learning about other writers' creative processes! if that sounds like you (or you're willing to fake it convincingly for that sweet, sweet interaction) then the wip hype squad is the place for you!
