Eulogy:

I tried to write this under a mango tree

remembering your love of mangoes,

how mama used to slice up the fruit

and tell stories at bedtime.

I tried to write this in the Harbour

and watching the boats I remembered

your passage to Dover, to England, with my mother.

Then walking along a deserted beach at dawn

I found a coconut washed up on the sand.

I was convinced that very coconut

had sailed from the West Indies,

from you to me, to tell me

it was time to go home.

I will always be writing this,

no matter where I go,

you walk beside me.

Words are not enough,

and it is in the silences,

the calm of the pauses

the memories of home

live on.
