bury me in the city excerpt: part of chapter one
For a moment, we were silent. The scent of burnt-sugar-now-cooled, of whipped cream icing, of the absence of candlelight heat, wafted up in front of us. The lights were shut off, and we welcomed the sight of the warm, frothy, Manhattan glow that poured through the windows, kissed the edges of the cracked hardwood floor our feet skirted against. I heard each of our breath’s hovering in our lungs, the same words we all ached to ask, tied close to our tongues.
“He’s not coming is he?” But I was the one to choke them out, trying to keep my voice as blank as possible. I didn’t even let my eyes flicker to the empty seat.
“Femi-” Rami caught my eye, his glare sharp, and his voice masked in the same. He was skilled at masking with irritation. Even though he was younger than me, he was still better at hiding his emotions.
“You know he would if he could.” Teta murmured. I couldn’t tell if she’d spoken to him that day, if he’d called her, and I was too afraid to ask. Even though I could practically hear his voice over phone static, a pleading, desperate thing run over by too many long walks on cold streets, and the sweetness of a French accent every atom in had always clung to.
“It doesn’t matter.” Rami said, eyes focused on the tabletop. “It’s still Mom’s birthday, and it doesn’t matter who’s here anymore.”
It did matter, to all of us. We could never rely on Dad for anything except to be there for today, but I figured no one had the strength to argue.

i saw @hepiit do this and i had it saved in my drafts because i wanted to do it too so here we go :)
for bury me in the city
describe the plot in one sentence.
a girl faces a lot of heartache in new york city while grappling w/ her past and her people and her ability to grant a single wish
pick one sight, smell, sound, feel and taste to describe the aesthetic for your novel.
golden hour breathing over the city skyline, burning birthday cake candles, the sound of soft piano playing, the feel of someone else’s heartbeat, the taste of champagne
which 3+ songs would make up a playlist for the novel?
i have like 300 honestly but my fav three atm: epilogue (instrumental from la la land) + taxi (exes) + time is dancing (ben howard)
what’s the time period and location in which the novel takes place?
current day nyc (mostly manhattan)
are there any former titles you’ve considered but discarded?
yes. i almost went with the curse of granting wishes and some of my other options were city skylines and last wishes and streets made of candlelight
what’s the first line of your novel?
what’s a line of dialogue you’re particularly proud of?
hmmm:
which line from the novel most represents it as a whole?
who are you character faceclaims?

i like tiffany’s (tiffany covington) fav rich kid debutante

femi: something sundressy/cutesy but also stylish usually white or yellow (v much so summer city fashion) nox: something simultaneously preppy and edgy tiffany: something that screams rich bad bitch
do any characters have distinctive birthmarks/scars?
femi has burns on her hands from the end of chapter 3 (one of my fav scenes ive ever written!!)
which character most fits a character trope?
kenneth for mean dad
which character is the best writer? worst?
nox could probably write. femi couldn’t.
which character is the best liar? worst?
nox and tiffany are both hella good liars, femi’s really not
which character swears the most? least?
lara swears tons, nox never does he hates it
which character has the best handwriting? worst?
nox has really pretty handwriting, timothe doesn’t
which character is most like you? Least like you?
femi is prob most like me but only in some ways we’re polar opposites in others... id hope kenneth is the least like me

tagging if you’d like this is a long one @carumens @worldbuildng @gloria-russell @astralysis
the only good thing about being this deep in my feelings is that i feel xtra ready to write bury me in the city
character creation tag
thank u @myscrivere xx
i already made one for femi here so now i’ll do one for nox from bury me in the city
1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.?)
backstory. i knew he was going to be rich with a kinda rocky family life. i also always knew he was going to be able to play piano.
2. Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?
femi obviously. but i designed them as individuals before linking them together at all.
3. How did you choose their name?
i really wanted him to have a three letter name for some reason so i searched around until i found one that fit. i also really liked the name carter for him but it was too close to carsen’s from goc so i didn’t go with it.
4. In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?
his wealth, his fame, and his father. it takes place in our modern world and i really wanted to write about fame and what comes out of it, esp because i have a close friend who has been negatively impacted by fame and it’s changes
5. Is there any significance behind their hair colour?
no he’s just got light brown hair
6. Is there any significance behind their eye colour?
no i just like gray eyes
7. Is there any significance behind their height?
not really
8. What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?
he’s a total cinephile like me
9. Are they based off of you, in some way?
no i feel like all of my ocs automatically have a level of me in them because im writing them but no part of nox is consciously based off me in any way
10. Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?
no. still don’t really.
11. What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: Writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?
hmm idk. i guess getting across his character without actually writing from his perspective as well as femi’s. i love his voice sm so i almost wish i was writing from his pov too but it’s always been important to me that bmitc is femi’s story before anyone else’s
12. How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?
not at all and i never will because bmitc’s ending is totally up to interpretation from what u took away from the book as a whole. it’s my fav ending ever i can’t wait to write it.
13. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?
1. he feels v v trapped in pretty much every aspect of his life
2. he treats people with kindness and never curses even if he doesn’t like them (which is hard because he really does not like a lot of people)
14. What is something about your OC that can make you laugh?
the fact that he’s prob that edgy boy who sits in his room sometimes and cries to like tame impala or rex orange county
15. What is something about your OC can make you cry?
the way he is a total victim to all the outside forces in his life and does not have much of a say (his dad, his fame, etc.) and the ways it hurts him
16. Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?
some things in him that remind me of a boy™ i know in real life but i still don’t really regret it it’s just there and i know it’s too deep-rooted to get out
17. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your
he tilts his head when he’s playing piano and always has his eyes shut
18. What is your favourite fact about your OC?
he lives in a nice ass pent-house in tribeca that i would do anything to spend an hour in (i based it after a real place i found on some real-estate site and okgosgh)

the girl of crimson and bury me in the city are such opposites like goc is that angsty teen who’s kinda permanently stuck in a rebellious phase and is totally numb and bmitc is their angelic twin who gets perfect grades and plays the piano but cries all the time
