Love Spells: Rituals, Spells & Potions to Spark Your Romantic Life
Written by Semra Haksever
Illustrated by Nes Bosnovik
My personal witchcraft path is... complex, to say the very least. I am all about researching and connecting to the folklore and mythology behind modern witchcraft. In fact, I believe that doing your own research is the single most important part of being a witch in the modern era. We are techno heathens; there is no excuse not to do a simple fact check.
However (if you couldn't already tell) I am also a "kitsche witch" in terms of what I like to surround myself with. My room is a mixture of Halloween décor, Llewellyn-style Wiccan merch, and Pinterest-ready modern crafts. And this book is gloriously "kitsche witch."
There are many "spells" and claims in this book with no citations or bases in mythology. It reads like the b-side one witch's grimoire with some very basics that even those who have barely opened the broom closet would know.
Oh, it's such a pretty book! Just look at these illustrations and layouts:
Illustrator Nes Vuckovic has really outdone herself. Her penchant for the sacred feminine form and surrealism fit so well during this odd Valentine's Day. The sense of playful darkness also lends to a witchcraft aesthetic that will make the squeaky clean uncomfortable.
To be fair, there are a couple of pages that I'll be saving for future rituals. Here are a couple of my favorites:
There's also a shorthand guide for both moon AND sun phases for different spells. I'm no moon phase fanatic (though my décor would tell you otherwise) but it really helps to have this kind of stuff be easy to read. Plus, dawn and dusk are my favorite times for rituals, so it's nice to see that get a mention.
Plus if you're into "crystalwoobs," the sun is what can actually charge a crystal for electrical use, rather than the moon... albeit very slowly. SCIENCE! 🧪
The book also features an entire section for self-love, which everybody needs, but especially us "gray sexual" folks. https://www.healthline.com/health/graysexual
In short, yes, I recommend this book, and for more than just a coffee table conversation with your muggle friends. Just remember to add a grain of salt to these spells before casting, because they need to be taken with it. And if you don't have an endless supply of pretty rocks to use, or is just not your thing, know that most crystal witchcraft is a modern invention, and culturally insensitive to boot!
How can well-meaning people reconnect to nature in an authentic way that does no harm to indigenous cultures and their sacred places? It may
Do no harm and live deliciously, witchlings! 🧹💫
