So I don’t have nightmares.
It’s weird, I have dreams that ABSOLUTELY SHOULD qualify for nightmares, but the element of fear just doesn’t exist in them. Take the one I had last night for example:
I’m somewhere with my brother and sister, a game or a challenge, and it’s something we’ve done before. It’s like a combination of irl D&D and The Hunger Games with bizarre mobs trying to kill us and other players armed with found weaponry also trying to kill us. I’m the leader, we have to solve puzzles to win or leave, and while the situation is incredibly high-pressure I’m not scared at all.
At some point in a lava/volcano dungeon zone, we’re doing really well against an onslaught of enemies (not sure about my sister and brother, but I’m playing it stealthy and have 6-ish headshots on enemies. Also, my killcount is pretty damn high. It seems I’m good at this). We get ambushed by another pair of players--one with an electric drill and the other with a chainsaw (I think, they were behind me for most of the altercation so I couldn’t tell). I’m caught, my siblings run off at my request, there’s the sound of the electric drill and a stabbing, burning pain in my leg.
That should by all means be a fucking horrifying dream, but there was no fear in there at all. I remember the major player emotions being mother-bear-esque protectiveness and dead-serious focus.
I don’t know, maybe I’ve fucked up my fear response with too much Creepypasta, but I haven’t had a dream I was scared awake from in 8 years and I’m starting to think I’ve literally modified my fight/flight response through internal characterization of myself.
If that is the case, then this subject needs more study.
EDIT: Also, if you were wondering about the two assholes at the end of the dream there, I get the distinct feeling they fuckin died.
