Imagine Jaskier and Ciri having these references and unintentional inside jokes because the bard is closer in age to Ciri than he is to Yennefer and Geralt.
Yennefer tries to teach Ciri advanced arithmetic for the purpose of chaos workings, and Ciri just looks between the book and Yennefer and points out that’s not how it’s done. And Yennefer refuses to believe that’s true, doesn’t care what the book says because it must be wrong, only for Jaskier to siddle on up and be like no no, Ciri’s right. He goes on to explain that Yennefer’s way works, but it’s outdated, and the book’s explanation is actually a lot easier if Yennefer would just let him—
Geralt comes back from hunting to a fuming, silent Yennefer, who is staunchly pretending she’s not listening in as Jaskier explains the book’s examples to Ciri. He blinks, decides he doesn’t even want to know, and goes to skin his rabbits.
So Jaskier has a more modern education. It’s fine, he’s a Professor, of course he has to know the most up to date methods! Honestly, when Yennefer thinks about it like that, she feels almost silly for being so self-conscious.
But then a few days later, Jaskier is taking requests for songs from Ciri, and Yennefer is feeling nostalgic so she commands the bard to sing a common ditty from her childhood. Geralt humms at the title, a vague sound of approval, which is the only thing that keeps her from glowering at the twin looks of confusion coming from the bard and the princess.
Yennefer can’t even be properly angry, not really, not when the bard looks like he’s going to cry at not being able to perform one of his “audience’s” requests. So Yennefer ignores his insistent claims of learning the song when he gets the chance, instead requesting one she’s heard at least a few times in taverns the past few years, which makes the bard perk up and quickly begin strumming.
Honestly, she knew she was a bit older than Jaskier, but even he should know what was such a famous song. He was a bard, for Melitele’s sake! That was literally his job!
So no, Yennefer shouldn’t feel bad. She didn’t. Not when the pair started talking about recent trends in court fashion and she had no clue what the waved crescent embroidery pattern was. Not when Ciri and Jaskier talked about a famous troubadour group she’d never heard of before. Not when they discussed the new dice game that every noble loved to play and she had to pretend she knew what they were talking about. And not when she could do nothing but stare as they spoke using…words, that were not Common, or Elder, or any other language she knew how to speak.
It was this last one that had her marching up to the witcher, and demanding that his child stop hogging her child, unaware that Ciri and Jaskier had followed after her when they saw how upset she was. Which only made Yennefer more embarrassed, which made her more angry, which led to the witcher, bard, and princess watching while the mage stomped off into the forest, the witcher quickly following after her to see if she was okay.
A moment passed, then two, before Jaskier turned to Princess Ciri, asking if she had any clue what had set the mage off.
Ciri shook her head, muttering something about those being born before the great cleansing being weird. Jaskier nodded at her insightful comment, and they sat back down, eager to return to their conversation on the famous singer Ciri had met a few years ago.
How Does Yennefer of Vengerberg (Netflix Witcher) React to Being Handed A Baby?
Immediate panic
Hands the baby back
Shrugs and looks after the baby
Adopts the baby on the spot
Very reluctantly takes care of the infant
