Atropa belladonna- Deadly nightshade is my favorite plant to work with and my primary plant spirit ally. Belladonna is an ethnobotanical par excellence, especially for witches. The spirit of the plant is analogous to the battle-sorceress of the plant realm. A fury, a harpy, redolent with sovereignty. Commanding both life and death. Belladonna is the dark goddess embodied in botanical form and connects to the currents of mythology associated with the witch goddess. Deadly nightshade is almost invariably associated with witches and their malefactors magic. I use belladonna for all sorts of things. Oils of influence, seduction and domination. Maleficia- hexing, cursing, crossing. Brings a subtle secrecy to maleficia workings, it’s beguiling qualities lulling them into a sense of security. Divination & Spirit work: opening the psychic senses (applied as an oil or ointment), incorporating small amounts into incense. Chthonic divination especially (ancestors, shades of the dead, nature spirits, underworld spirits) Connecting with deities and spirits associated with witchcraft and magic: Circe, Medea, Hecate Chthonia, Hel, Bellona, Furies, Harpies, Valkyries, Fates, morai, the devil. For protection and passage in the chthonic realms. To enter these places you must separate yourself from the things that make you a living human. You must become like the spirits to enter their realm, and deadly nightshade helps achieve that. (Used to anoint the body prior to shamanic journeying) These are just a few potential uses. Deadly nightshade is a magical catalyst, meaning it is one of a few herbs capable of empowering any working, albeit with a chthonic, Saturnian and Thessalian nature.
