The Aghori are a group of ascetic shaman that practice necromancy, dwell in graveyards and consume poisonous and intoxicating plants to connect with divinity. Deadly Nightshade Salve and other Poison Path Ointments each has their own ritual correspondences for use as an anointing oil. As with everything, reality is often very different from the fantasy, or the nightmare in this case. The fear perpetuated around these plants was a smear campaign by the Church and medical physicians who wanted to decimate the people’s folk knowledge. What was once the most common medicinal preparation in the West, was now a diabolical instrument of plague, death and maleficia. Witches perpetuating fear around the use of flying ointments that they haven’t tried are using the same scare tactics as the inquisitors. Educate yourself, but be realistic. Fear and fear no getting always come from a lack of understanding. As one that has pushed the boundaries with many of these plants in their different forms, I understand the spectrum that they work on. Being afraid is part of the taboo. I made the labels for the Skin Leaper’s Salve a little more exciting! This magical ointment uses medicinal aconite root, yarrow and vervain essential oils. Used as a ritual entheogen it has slightly different properties from the nightshade formulas. Wolfsbane has a mercurial spirit and is associated with shapeshifting and shamanism. Like the other baneful plant allies wolfsbane can help us connect to other spiritual energies including Odin, Thor, Shiva and Hekate. The brewing of Unguentum Venenum is always a nerfarious task. This dark and verdant unguent is a traditional witches ointment made from Atropa belladonna Hyoscyamus niger, wood ash and essential oils (the essential oils aren’t traditional but work synergistically) mugwort, clary sage and spikenard. This has been the most visual for me personally. Slight perceptual changes enhanced by darkness, seeing “sparks” these are the nightshade sparks some of you may be familiar with if you’ve tried this ointment. I’ve had some lucid states, and entity visitation with this one. I start with a strong infusion of both herbs using my special extraction technique. I also add wood ash. Soot was a traditional flying ointment ingredient but I have substituted for wood ash to alkalize the formula and enhance absorption. You only add maybe a quarter teaspoon of the ask because you don’t want to over alkalize it.
