okay but clyde is missing an arm... hephestus is the only god with a physical deformity... parallels
BANGS GAVEL ON TABLE AND YELLS SO LOUD THAT THE HEAVENS PART AND GOT HIMSELF COMES DOWN TO SHUSH ME
I HAVE CHOSEN WHO WILL BE HEPHESTUS
oh my god just THINK about it and think about jimmy as apollo, the beautiful, enchanting sun god, and mellie as artemis, the stern, elusive, gorgeous moon goddess
and then there’s clunky hephestus clyde, all broken and misshapen, unlike his beautiful brothers and sisters who are perfect in every way. cast out of the skies for his ugliness, he learned to be strong through toil and self-made work, laboring to create perfection through his skills, but it’s not enough to fill the gap in his heart...
if the other gods were beautiful, she is radiant. if the other gods were perfect, she is beyond perfection. born from pure loveliness, seafoam and stardust, she’s bright-eyed and more lovely than any of the jewels he’s mined for, more glittering than any of the gold he so lovingly crafts.
no necklace or ring or diadem he creates will ever be enough to beautify her like they beautify the other gods. no, she is beyond his craft, and he is in love with her. but how can a monster love a star? how can the mud love the sky?
he covers his ugly face, the face so terrible that not even his own mother could love it, the face that broke his body and expelled him from heaven, but little does he know that the woman he loves is not above him, not up on a pedestal, but sees him as her equal, her match, her completed half.
everyone in the pantheon has someone to love, someone to match to. but not her. she is strange and alien, not made like the others. she is not a brother and sister to the other gods. she is alone. and so is he. so she reaches out to him and finds that all the callouses on his hands are not rough to her, but solid, humanizing. his scars are not ugly, but give him character and depth that the other gods lack. his “brokenness” is not “brokenness” at all; he is gifted, strong, courageous. a survivor. and she loves him, in all his errors and strangeness and imperfection, because he is everything that is beautiful in the world.
and he cannot believe his luck.
