Grian the kind of witch to try jumping off the roof of the house the moment he hears that the wings should be capable of flight

I do honestly believe mumbo would have to physically restrain him to keep him from jumping off the roof of the house XD like I'm pretty sure that's canon

yess the withc au!! I think about how grian needs help with his growing wings while Mumbo needs to preen his. Sitting together, reaching around to help comb the feathers

you're right you're right i remember saying before that mumbo underestimates how long it takes to preen his feathers in his human form since he's used to smaller wings in bird form ^^ They really do be helping each other. and I can only imagine grian's excitement when mumbo declares g's wings big enough to allow flight :)

Sadly I'm still kinda stuck on a couple of key points, like what grian does as a job, and how mumbo really feels about magic and witches and humans?

But I do like to imagine the moments where grian is trying to teach mumbo very basic elemental magic, like maybe how to control a stream of water, or summon a breeze. really gentle things that grian gets tired of (in favor of more destructive magic that mumbo refuses to have grian even practice in the house) I think mumbo really likes stuff that connects him back to nature :) peace love and plants xoxo

oh that reminded me- i can see mumbo quickly taking the role of a bossy parent, especially when it comes to the cleanliness of the house? he's lived there longer than grian it means more to him yknow! plus i think grian is pretty messy and leaves his studies all around ^^ My last drawing- with mumbo preparing food, i think he quickly took over that responsibility for the both of them since i think grian doesnt take a lot of time to think about his nutrition with all his studying (though, if the two of them fight mumbo will just find something to eat as a bird outside or simply cook for just himself sadhjkf)

hi i absolutely love your witch and familiar (there was a better name for it but i cant remember now) au !!!!

i was just wondering, was grian friends with bird mumbo beforehand? obviously he wasn't sentient, but had they bonded as human and animal until grian decided to cast the spell?

or was mumbo just chilling as a bird one day and then all of a sudden was human because some witch cast a spell on him. then he and said witch bonded and became friends after that. that'd be pretty funny

hihi thank you so much!! i call the au "withc" au :) a mix of witch + hc (hermitcraft) ;) only slightly confusing!

mumbo had lived in grians house (you can see his house here, this post also sorta answers your question) before grian ever moved in. Once grian moved in, mumbo was territorial and didnt let grian up to the tower that he settled. grian didnt really care about the tower so he didnt want to put effort in scaring out some old bird. BUT! mumbo took more and more notice of the shiny pretty magic grian did downstairs, so he would watch through the window until eventually grian left a window open and mumbo sorta just wandered in! The rule with the familiar spell is that it will not work if both parties do not want to be bonded like that. i figure there must have been some moment where mumbo and grian sorta realize that theyre buds? and grian takes the opportunity to try the spell and it works :) but there should be some meaningful moment i just dont know what that could be yet ^^

Nice, an old au is back, glad it wasn't abandoned like others. In any case, how large would Grian's wing grow? Is it just gonna stay tiny or eventually grow to Mumbo's size?

PAHA it’s alright when aus get abandoned, much better than if creators come back to revive it when they don’t actually care for it I think ^^

Grian’s wings should grow to the same size as mumbo’s :) (maybe slightly smaller since grian is a bit shorter) I’m excited to get to the point since then mumbo could teach grian how to fly 👀

But for the moment they’re still tiny and mumbo makes fun of him for it ahdhsh

I just saw the withc au for the first time and already I love it, can you tell us more about it for those of us not it the know :D

Thank you very much! my latest post was the first time in a while that i posted about it, so i might as well do a refresher :)

My eventual goals for the au is to assign every hermit as witch or familiar, or at least some other related figure in this fantasy world ^^

At the moment, the only confirmed pairs are mumbo and grian, mumbo having originally been a chough! a kind of bird, which grian cast the familiar spell on, turning mumbo into a person and giving grian some bird features :)

Mumbo has to serve as grian's assistant sorta? I tentatively decided that grian should run an enchanting/illusion service based in his house..? or maybe he has a small shop in a town nearby? and in the meantime he studies, uh, a bunch of magic that i havent figured out yet ^^

Notes on Familiars

a witch can turn (nearly) any creature into a familiar

the familiar spell consumes a witch's focus, doesn't just drain it (consumes part of the witch)

a familiar must obey all commands by the witch, but they get a longer lifespan and the language comprehension of the witch

The familiar spell instills the focus with some of the castor's energy, the portion of the given energy must match the portion taken from the animal. The witch must have enough energy to spare which can be cultivated through practice or training

This is why the witch will take some aspects of the animal and the animal gets a longer lifespan!

withc!mumbo and grian, maybe one of the first times mumbo tries walking around as a human ^^ mumbo tends to lean too far foward since he's used to his bird spine paha mumbo's since adjusted perfectly

yeah! familiars have to get used to their human forms, especially if they're adults at the time of the spell. since grian lives alone he was pretty happy to spend some time helping mumbo, but of course very entertaining to watch him fall straight on his face ^^
