Ellery’s Garden #1

As any veteran vegetable gardener knows, less is more when it comes to planting.  Though brilliant in all other regards, Ellery is nevertheless a novice when it comes to tilling the soil, and he is rapidly discovering that less is definitely more, and more is OMG WHAT AM I GOING TO DO WITH ALL OF THIS FOOD?! more.  Consequently, El is learning to get creative when it comes to sharing the bounty of his garden.

Ellery’s Garden #4

Pumpkins!  Pumpkins!  Pumpkins!

Alec has never seen so many gourds in one place.  Like a fair portion of Ellery’s garden he thought they’d, once again, just planted too much. “Cat, Alec!”  Ellery catted on for some moments, gesturing at the large patch at the far end of the garden where all the pumpkins were growing and ripening.  No, this was not accidental.  It was deliberate because El had apparently wanted a pumpkin patch where the children of Devil’s Gulch could come with their parents and pick out a pumpkin to carve for Halloween and celebrate the harvest season. Grace, Bob, Lucy, Mele, Sam and several other of their friends were already helping Ellery plan for a harvest festival in mid-October.  One to rival that of Mary Ellen Wilson’s in town. Alec was so doomed!

Ellery’s Garden #2

As if the excess of tomatoes was not enough, the sheer number of courgettes that Alec and Ellery are pulling out of the garden on a daily basis makes the  stream of code Q once wrote to infiltrate the United States Treasury Department look like a children’s book three pages long.  Why did no one tell him ONLY ONE PLANT! “Bob did, El,” Alec sighs, picking his 15th courgette of the morning.  “Bob and Miriam and Grace and --” “CAT!!!”  Yes, I know, damn it! Thankfully,  Priya Vaughn, the owner and head chef at Station 440, took pity on him and decided to source her zucchini directly from Ellery rather than other growers down in the valley.  Otherwise, Alec and El would’ve been up to their ears in courgette bread, courgette cookies, courgette noodles, courgette soup ... There were only so many courgette fries one could eat, after all. Next year only one plant.

Ellery’s Garden #3

Ellery has always loved Brussels sprouts.  When he was a kid, he would peel back each layer of the “wee cabbage” as if unwrapping a little present, eating each leaf as he went.  Back then, he enjoyed them steamed with tons of butter and salt and pepper, but now as an adult, there are so many options available to him. Needless to say, when Ellery planned out his garden, Brussels sprouts were always going to be a part of it.  However, he’d never known how they actually grew and was more than a tad stunned that they grew on a stalk. “What’d you expect, El?  For them to grow on the ground like cabbages?” Alec asked with a chuckle when the first stalks started popping out of the ground. “Cat!  Alec!”  Of course!  They’re wee cabbages! Not that it ultimately matters.  He has dozens of Brussels sprouts stalks growing in his garden to keep him in wee cabbages for some time to come.   Though he still loves them steamed with tons of butter and salt and pepper, he now counts crispy Brussels sprouts as his favourite way to have them prepared.
