@withspectres:
Bleary and gray is the world when he blinks the first few times. Everything comes into focus slowly. First the ceiling, then his surroundings. Windows with tall blinds, machinery next to his slightly uncomfortable bed, and… a girl holding his hand. Clearly he’s in a hospital. If he’s injured then the pain hasn’t hit him yet. It’s the GIRL that has him confused.
Either he truly doesn’t know her, or something is wrong with his brain.
“Uh. Hi.” He glances from her face down to her petite hand resting on his own. What the hell happened.
Salem would kill her if she knew, which was exactly why River was still here in the hospital and was avoiding any of her sister’s phone callls. She was thankful that she was the computer genius or Salem, in her protective nature, might have put a tracker on her phone.
But things weren’t meant to turn out this way.
She’d taken the car for a quick drive downtown, just to get lunch, but ended up swerving into the pedestrian walk to avoid a stray dog. It all happened too quickly and the next thing she knew, she’d knocked a man right off his feet. Oh she didn’t really crash into him, thank god, but he did fall and knock his head on the pavement.
Seriously, wake up soon!
“Oh my god, you’re finally alive,” she let out breath of relief when he spoke, quickly holding out three fingers, “How many fingers am I holding up?” Because if she brain damaged a man with her less than spectacular driving skills, Salem might do more than just kill her.
