🔁 A fic you’ve re-read several times
Not sure if you and I have discussed this Z, but I spent a lot of time in my early days of this fandom reading as much fantasy fic as I could (including dragon fic). and THE dragon fic that should be used as the gateway to any and all other dragons fics is, in my opinion, an unlikely favor by @cupcakemolotov.
I don't know what I could say about this fic, or about the authors writing that hasn't already been said but i'm gonna try.
it's KC but for once in his life, Klaus is not the more powerful one in the relationship. it's KC and they're possessive of each other in ways that just feel right. it's KC and its dragons and the world building is so good, it seems impossible that it was written in under 15k.
I've probably read this one fic over 10x because it never gets old and the writing is gorgeous. I learned so much about what I like to see in my KC fanfiction from this fic, and from this author. it'll have a place in my heart forever.
📆 A fic you’d re-read 10 years from now
I have a LOT of fic that I love and return to regularly, but top of my head and a fic I've been thinking a LOT about is Burned by @honestgrins. There are easily 10 other honestgrins fics I have re-read and would love to re-read again in 10 years. but i think about burned SO MUCH Y'ALL. I THINK ABOUT IT A LOT. this is, in part, due to @recyclingss and her willingness to talk all things honestgrins all the time, but its also because this fic is FANTASTIC.
I know that many people have read this on the strength of honestgrins writing alone, and they should, that's the correct course of logic in my mind. but in case you haven't, here is a short list of why every single person in this fandom should read Burned
1) there is something about an honestgrins multichap that is so captivating. she is exceptional in all formats from short to long, but her mulitchaps are culminations of basically every element I love about her writing, in one neat package. from chapter 1 honestgrins builds this world similar to the one we know from canon, only it's full of insightful characterization and choice plotlines that feel Important [ bc we all know JP could n e v e r ].
2) the angst is so well balanced with the moments of understanding and connection. burned is a soulmate AU but the tension that exists between KC makes it unlike any soulmate AU i've ever read. its just! so! good!
3) the writing is beautiful. burned is a fic that's a little darker and more emotionally charged than your typical drabble, but every emotion you feel is so EARNED and so well written that the fic just flows. combo that with what I was talking about earlier ie: this fic being SO engaging, and yea, I'd happily read it again tomorrow or in 10 years.
y'all please read burned, and then write when you wanna explode bc you're about to jump off the edge of your seat, go drop her a comment and congratulate honestgrins on..... being honestgrins 💖 and thank her for being one of the backbones of this fandom
💞 A fic that led to you making friends with the author
I can't speak for @definedareasofuncertainty [ao3] but a big part of me feels we are friends because of the road not taken. you could also say we're friends because of discord, and you'd be right! but I read the road not taken before I made many close friends in this fandom, so a part of me is always gonna feel like Luiza and I's author/reader relationship and subsequent friendship started with that fic.
to be frank, Lu cracked my heart wide open with that fic, and the comment that resulted from that experience is nothing short of me sobbing into her inbox because that fic struck me with it’s beautiful writing, and it’s really true to (my) life portrayal of how moments of joy feel amongst long stretches of life being hard.
I can't imagine what it takes to write and share something with that much emotional depth, but I will love that fic forever and I'm grateful it's a part of how she and I became friends.
