I’m re-reading homestuck after giving it a cursory read through a few years ago. Now that I’m not being overwhelmed by a story that is extremely different and a bit difficult to read first try, I’m enjoying it a lot more.

I’m really intrigued by the concepts in the very early acts. The fetch modi, the complex systems integrated into the Sburb game, being able to manipulate reality through a computer client, etc.

Like, the combination of stupid bullshit gags and extremely well thought out world building that refuses to justify its existence ( I’d love to have my own Fetch Modi) is really really cool to me.

I know the stuff with the Trolls and the Godhood and more systems take precedence later (as far as I recall) but a lot of this early stuff has a charm that I wish had been able to stay more relevant in later acts and chapter.

Mostly I’ve found I just really like stories with extremely well thought out and complex world “mechanics” (homestuck) world building ( To the Stars, a very dense and extremely cool Madoka Magica fanfic) extremely well researched to the point of being more on point than later material in the same series ( Dragon from Ash, Skyrim fanfic that does a deep dive into the question of “ what if a dark elf was the Dragonborn”). It’s hard to find books with this sort of writing style bc I don’t know how to describe it lmao.

Why is Thunderbird 2 piloted from the right hand side when aircraft are usually piloted on the left?

Let me geek out and use my Avionics degree real quick. I have thought about this since I started watching Thunderbirds.

In normal aviation, it is typical for the pilot to be on the left side, and the co-pilot on the right. So why was Thunderbird 2 different?

It was something one of my instructors said about a helicopter pilot being on the right due to the cyclic, which is normally located on the right, that caught my attention. The cyclic controls the attitude and direction of a helicopter. So that had me thinking, because TB2 had VTOL (vertical take-off and landing), does that technically classify it as a helicopter?

Well googling ‘is TB2 a helicopter’ didn’t really help… So in all honesty, I asked my teacher. He found it interesting and then asked if it would be similar to an Osprey? The Osprey is a military aircraft with VTOL capabilities. Combining the high speeds of an aircraft with the manoeuvrability of a helicopter. Turns out, an Osprey is also piloted on the right hand side. Making it similar to TB2 in its manoeuvrability. (An Osprey’s engines can rotate to be vertical or horizontal.)

It pleases me greatly to see that the TAG developers took this into consideration when recreating the classic show, because in the classic, Virgil piloted in the middle. Back during the original series, helicopters were still relatively new (approx 30 years), and in early helicopters, it was common for there to be only one seat, so the pilot would sit in the middle. It is unknown if that is the reason Virgil sat in the center of Thunderbird 2 in the original series, or that was just where he wanted to sit.
