i really appreciate seeing all the posts on my dash recently to the effect of "shutting down conversations about race/gender/minorities in fandom spaces because 'fandom is meant to be fun' is just an excuse to not think critically about the bigoted behaviors you are exhibiting". i hope that this energy carries over into the gaming sphere next pleaaseee

#i (virtually) attended the game devs of color expo last year (2025)#and they had a really interesting panel about representation (or lack thereof) in cozy games #which i feel like lots of people point to and go 'ohh my god why are you finding reasons to complain its a video game its meant to be fun'#when like. even if you play stardew valley as a black character your grandfather is still white #i booted up monster crown (shout out atarsto) maybe half a year ago and the same thing #i make myself black. my father and mother npcs are white #its literally just like a palette swap for that game because everyone is a 16 by 16 sprite it should not be like that #we can talk about most cozy games having farming elements and how farming is seen as a peaceful escape for western audiences #while in other parts of the world it very much isn't #and i'm not saying that means we should STOP having farming sims or whatever #im pro solarpunk. i think it's good for people to imagine a world where they can take care of plants and stuff #but like. can we have a CONVERSATION about it. can we at least DISCUSS it.#there's things here that we aren't discussing and it's slowly becoming normalized to the point where calling it out reads as bizarre to you #that's scary. to me.#wizard studies #what the fuck ever this gets my gamedev tag

I swear that finals simultaneously makes us the most human and most inhuman we ever are.

Because you might really love what you’re studying! And it’s such a struggle to be pulling late nights, burning out, tired eyes and a tired mind and the cold setting in earlier and earlier these days. It’s a lot. Especially when you want to enjoy the projects you’re doing, know you’re capable of it, but the exhaustion just takes away your capacity to love the work. It’s a helpless feeling, and it wears you down like nothing else.

But also, the little moments just get so much sweeter. When your breaks are shorter, you have to squeeze more goodness into them. And so breaks from work are for important things. They’re for making peppermint hot chocolate with marshmallows in it, and every moment you’re making the drink is a moment you’re not working—so you savor the ritual of the stirring the mint in your cup, of measuring the chocolate, watching the marshmallows bob. Breaks are for sleep, and it feels so nice to get in bed, to be warm, when December rattles your windows. Early mornings are a distant thought when it’s 3am and your sheets are soft. And breaks are for dancing with your roommates, impromptu, all of you in pajamas. And even if none of you know how to dance, and you’ll be back to work in a song or two, and it’s so so late at night, it’s good. Maybe you’re a little too burnt out to call it feeling alive, but you feel human, and you think that’s almost as good.

i think one of my favorite things about silksong (from a purely mechanical perspective) is the way that it handles double damage. i know that a lot of people were horrified to realize how many things do two masks per hit- trust me, i was terrified too- but after meandering through my second playthrough i realized why i've come to actually endear myself to it? as strange as it is to say?

i admire that the game teaches you how to be hornet.

the game- VERY explicitly, for something that goes verbally unsaid- coaches you that there are some manner of things that you should evade at ALL costs. and i think the reason for this is because hornet simply would not allow those things to happen to her.

hornet would not be trampled underfoot by a stampeding beast. hornet would not get torn to shreds by the claws of a giant predator mite. hornet would not get squashed under the fat ass of disgraced chef lugoli.

and so, not only does the game do a good job at teaching you how to play in a more general sense. but it also coaches you how to play in character AS hornet. which makes your successful battles feel all the more badass when you're embodying the strategies and behaviors of the character you're meant to be.

i also think, purely in hindsight, it's funny to compare it to the way damage works in hollow knight. yes, ghost is a little tank, but even beyond that, the game lets you develop your own strategies at your leisure. maybe because there isn't anything that ghost especially would or would not do. that's for you to figure out.

AS someone who's abt to get my major in interactive narrative #its really fun that the game teaches and rewards you for playing 'in character'#in character is my favorite way to play

another thing that i really like about silksong is the way that they introduced worldbuilding; not only because it's easier than ever before to get access to it through the relic system, but also because of the kinds of worldbuilding they introduced. there's so much stuff that was absent from hollow knight, to the point where it really does feel like team cherry looked at all of the questions we had about more common stuff, and built off of it.

pondering the hypothetical meals that bugs would have eaten, both during hallownest's prime and after it's fall? well here in pharloom you can collect ingredients, prepare meals, see the meals you've made, hear about different recipes, and even see the farms where specific bug meat is harvested.

want to know what the citizens of hallownest do for entertainment? well in pharloom you have theaters, records on gramophones, a (seemingly) publicly accessible indoor garden/zoo, public showers, as well as more familiar things like spas.

need to come up with a theoretically plausible tool/object, but you're unsure of the specific properties of the materials avalible in hallownest? well in pharloom not only can you collect raw materials, but you can store specific ones in your house, and learn more about them at a moment's notice.

want to write about the specifics of a home, but you've never gotten a chance to actually look too closely at the inside of one in hallownest? here just take one. and take all of these furniture pieces that can canonically be installed into one.

it really does feel like an intentional (and incredibly generous) offering from team cherry; a nuanced narrative foundation for the world that they clearly love so much. a little leg up for fan artists and people who just generally like worldbuilding a lot. i appreciate it a great deal.
