lace who spent her entire life under her mother with thread-straight hair, which only finally starts to curl after post-canon. but lace who doesn't know how to take care of her natural hair, because. well. why would she?
lace who is afraid that she looks horrible, because she doesn't know how to preen herself. lace who tries brushing her hair and freaks out when the curls turns to frizz. lace who tries combing her hair while its dry and nearly ends up in tears.
lace who can not help but see this evolution of herself and fret and fret about what if it was not the proper decision at all. lace when perfection was bare minimum, and these growing pains are unfamiliar and terrifying, and she can't help but feel as if they are wrong, wrong, wrong.
black girls who have never seen themselves in the world before, and as such can not help but worry that every aspect unique to them is a flaw.
in the spirit of this post i've been experimentally playing around w latin lyrics for phantom. for fun. im playing touys.
everything that's in brackets is either the translation of a too-literal phrase, or just the easiest way to understand something without a direct translation
'Pias fraus' translates directly to 'pious fraud', which is a term used to refer to wrongdoings committed by the church for the express purpose of befitting the church. which is pretty much what all of the citadel is. to me. i wanted to slip it in
'morior invictus' translates directly to 'i die unconquered', which from my understanding is when a piece of you dies (spiritually/emotionally) while your body continues to live. very fitting for this suicidal freak
+ things that i wanted to play around with but the syllable count wasn't working for me:
‘ab incunabulis’, literally translating to 'from the cradle', a phrase that would translate more properly into 'from the beginning. i don't think i need to specify why i thought this one would be fun
‘ignis aurum probat’, literally translating to 'fire tests gold', a phrase used to refer to one's character being hardened under extreme circumstances
‘pede poena claudo’, literally translating to 'punishment comes limping', a phrase used to refer to a slow and painful crawl towards salvation. this is also self explanatory
‘res, non verba’, literally translating to 'deeds, not words', more colloquially translated as 'actions speak louder than words'
‘semper reformanda’, literally translating to 'always needing reformation'
‘timidi mater non flet’, literally translating to 'a coward's mother never weeps', a phrase used to explain that if you are not an honorable person, not even your own family will mourn you. this, too, is self explanatory
