So in Iolaea during the crises with all of the other Wizards it's never really explained what Gemja is doing. Basically she is just watching all this happen, here is an entry from her Journal to explain her thoughts:
An Entry from the Journal of Gemja-
"I have gone back to my old ways of observing. My family is falling apart, I've already lost one family, I can't lose another. I don't know what to do, I just don't know! I can't take it! It's driving me insane just having to sit here and watch everything crumble around me! Masen is like a mother to me, I couldn't bear to ever lose her. I miss Salix, I miss Aleks, I miss Masen, I miss the way it used to be! Their bodies may be here but the Wizards I used to know certainly aren't. I wish we could just go back to the good old days. Everyone forgets how young I am, I never got a normal childhood, it has always been observe and survive. Until I met the Wizards, they welcomed me, taught me their ways and basically raised me. I still had to mature very quickly and even with the war I felt safe, knowing I had found where I belonged. They are my family and I love them all so much. I feel so helpless, I want to help them so badly but I don't know how! It's slowly breaking me apart...."
Masen was just going into her mine shaft when she heard Aleks talking to a couple of the mortals again. She smiled and carried on her way. As she got deeper into her mining expedition, she thought about the other wizards.
Aleks was around the most, always interacting with the mortals. She had found them in the middle of making a ritual and helped him in how to do it properly. He was quite young at the time, 13 years old give or take. He had already ascended to wizardry with the help of Intuition, so she offered him to join her and connect to her crystal in order to take his wizardry further. It was nice for Masen have someone around after 'She' left. He was reluctant to talk about his past, but Masen did not push. She understood that some people like to keep things to themselves. They got along well for many years, she trained Aleks in how to become a better wizard and Aleks provided Masen with the company of another person. All in all, she thought of him to be a younger brother, even possibly a son, of sorts, and cared for him as such.
By this time Masen had turned around and started to head back to her home, with a full pack of resources. As she walked along the narrow hall way of her strip mine her mind went to Gemja.
Gemja was quite a quiet person, always watching curiously from the sidelines. She joined us after observing Aleks', Salix's and Masen's work from afar. Masen had noticed her hiding and watching as they worked but did not approach her, in fear of scaring her off. When she came up to Masen and asked to join them, she could hardly say no. Even now, she stays to the side of things, and only comes in when she is needed or when she wants to voice her opinion. She had yet to show any trace of her essence, but as long as she was safe and happy, Masen was happy. Gemja was like the quite little sister/daughter she never had, so Masen always kept an eye on her, to keep her safe.
As Masen teleported to her vault her mind wandered again. She thought about Karajan, or Proj as she was now known, and the difficult times she had faced, while she put in some ores to smelt.
Masen had found Proj near the beginning of the war along with Aleks and Salix. She was at the base of the tree of life after running away from her home in the fire village, after it had been destroyed, taking her mother's life with it. Masen felt her heart break at the sight of the young girl, who reminded her of someone she would never forget. She offered the young girl the opportunity to become a wizard like them and she accepted. She said her name was "Karajan" but Masen believed that this was a fake name but allowed her to continue with the name as she was going through a hard time as it was. Proj was a lovely person and good to be around, however her essence told a completely different story. Insanity was, to be completely honest, completely in-controllable. They would cause so much pain and grief for Proj, every time they came out, Masen felt as if she could feel Proj's pain herself. Unfortunately, all she could do was help to calm Proj down to a point where she could take control over Insanity…
Masen shook her head out of her thoughts and saw that all the ores had been smelted. She put the materials away, fixed her diamond pick and organised her inventory before heading back down into the mine. I should continue with my mining, more reminiscing can wait for another day…
