So in Iolaea during the crises with all of the other Wizards it's never really explained what Gemja is doing. Basically she is just watching all this happen, here is an entry from her Journal to explain her thoughts:
An Entry from the Journal of Gemja-
"I have gone back to my old ways of observing. My family is falling apart, I've already lost one family, I can't lose another. I don't know what to do, I just don't know! I can't take it! It's driving me insane just having to sit here and watch everything crumble around me! Masen is like a mother to me, I couldn't bear to ever lose her. I miss Salix, I miss Aleks, I miss Masen, I miss the way it used to be! Their bodies may be here but the Wizards I used to know certainly aren't. I wish we could just go back to the good old days. Everyone forgets how young I am, I never got a normal childhood, it has always been observe and survive. Until I met the Wizards, they welcomed me, taught me their ways and basically raised me. I still had to mature very quickly and even with the war I felt safe, knowing I had found where I belonged. They are my family and I love them all so much. I feel so helpless, I want to help them so badly but I don't know how! It's slowly breaking me apart...."
Keira grumbled all the way back to the tree about that ‘stupid blue-haired deer lover from water’. She used the teleporter to get the the top where Masen was sitting, looking at the sun set. Keira’s frustrations just faded away as she looked at her partner properly for the first time in around 200 years. She went and sat down next to her, after putting her sword to the side. Masen immediately leant her head onto Keira’s shoulder and sighed. Keira smiled slightly and wrapped her arm around Masen. They sat there in a comfortable silence until Masen spoke up.
“Why do you have such a hatred towards Maddie love?” Masen asked quietly, so as not to ruin the moment too much. Keira sighed.
“I…” Keira stopped speaking for a moment as she remembered the reasoning behind the deer loving bitc- Maddie. Keira’s silence caused Masen to look up at her, and look deeply into her dark purple eyes.
“Well?” She asked softly as she looked down at her partners hands. Masen moved both her hands over to Keira’s left hand and squeezed it gently. She was surprised to feel a tear fall onto her hand and looked to see tears falling from Keira’s eyes. “Oh no, love please don’t cry!” Masen got on to her knees and went to wipe her tears away but Keira grabbed her wrists.
“I-I left y-you…” Keira managed to get out. “I left you for years Mase, years! I didn’t want to but I did.” Masen froze before moving her hands from Keira’s grip and getting up. I knew it, she’s gonna leave. Keira thought. I don’t deserve to be with her… Then she felt Masen drag her arm, to get her to stand up. As she did, she was dragged over to the double bed and pushed down. Masen then curled up to Keira’s side like a small child would to their parent.
“Look, I would argue with you till the sun rose but I have had a slightly traumatic experience right now and I would rather have you hold me.” So I know you are real, and not another illusion… Masen thought. Keira slowly moved her arms around the Masen and the two of them lay there till the moon set and the sun started to rise. At some point the two of them must have fallen asleep as Masen woke up with her head tucked under Keira’s chin. She carefully disentangled her from Keira and went down the tree to their old home to make breakfast.
As Masen was cooking, she couldn’t help but think over what happened yesterday. She choked on her breath and tears filled her eyes. Aleks… She thought as she fell to the ground and curled up into a ball, full on sobbing now. What did I do? I was only trying to help… Oh god, he hates me now, he’ll never want to be around me ever again. Why does everyone I love leave in the most painful of ways… She thought back to when Keira left her “Be back soon Love!” She had said after giving Masen the first and best kiss of her life. She thought soon had meant in a few days. But those days turned into months, months turned into years and years turned into decades.
Aleks was the first person she had met after Keira had left, she was in a state of depression, and if it were not for Wisdom, she doubted that she would have still been around. Aleks gave her a light to her life, someone else to care for. Soon after the other wizards joined them and Masen had snapped back into being her relatively normal self. Sure there would always be a part of her that wished Keira was around, but that part did not take over her life as much anymore.
And now… Masen turned of the cooker and climbed into her old bed, sobbing her heart out over losing Aleks. Keira had woken up by this point and heard Masen’s quiet sobbing and climbed down the tree before running into the house to see Masen crying. She ran over and crouched next to Masen.
“Mase? Mase please stop crying, please…” Keira could feel tears forming in her eyes. “Mase, tell me what’s wrong. Do I need to go kick some ass?” She smiled slightly when she heard Masen let out a small laugh. Masen managed to stop crying but her eyes were still red raw. She looked at Keira and spoke in a small voice.
“Why would Aleks do that? I was only trying to help…” Her bottom lip started to tremble. Keira sighed and sat next to Masen, pulling her onto her lap, letting her cry some more. She knew she couldn’t let this go on. Aleks when I find you next, we are going to have a looonnngggg talk about shit… Keira thought.
“Mase, I’m gonna tell you what I’ve been doing and what’s going on but you have to let me talk, no interruptions okay?” Masen shook her head slightly before nodding. For the next few hours Keira explained everything, from when she left to “Zaleks”. Masen was silent throughout Keira’s story and when Keira was finished she just looked at Keira with a blank expression. After she said nothing for a couple of minutes, Keira started to freak out. “Mase? Please say something!” Masen smiled slightly before getting on to her knees so she was level with Keira. She then leant her forehead against hers, eyes closed. “Mase?” Keira asked but was interrupted by Masen giving her a long kiss on the lips. When they broke apart, Masen looked into Keira’s eyes before speaking.
“Need a helping hand?” She asked quietly. Keira sat there frozen for a moment before she realised what Masen was asking. She grinned widely and lifted Masen up before spinning round. They giggled together and Keira put Masen down, foreheads together before answering.
“Always.” The two of them headed back to the tree and stayed there for the rest of the day. Keira had fallen asleep a while ago but Masen was still awake, watching the moon rise and wander across the night sky. I understand now… She thought as she closed her eyes, grin on her face. But before she fell asleep, Masen nudged Keira, who woke up with a start, ready to fight anything. Masen put a hand on her arm causing her to look at Masen with slight confusion. “One thing though…” Keira looked confused but nodded. “Try to be nicer to everyone? Especially Maddie.” Keira opened her mouth to argue but Masen just rose an eyebrow at her, Keira sighed.
“Okay, I’ll try Love.” Masen smiled and snuggled into Keira’s side. She fell asleep quickly and Keira smiled at her. She brushed Masen’s hair out of her face and kissed her purple tinged eye. “I’ll try…” She whispered. But if she pisses me off I will fucking fight...
