Title: Watch the Skies
Rating: G
Fandom: Wild Kratts demon AU, technically Flutterkratt though not specifically a pairing fic
Summary: A storm blows a bird's nest into the hands of Chris and his Shadowed demon self, and now he has to deal with it
Notes: Inspired by a discussion with Usami about wanting to see "scary, horrible" Shade do something gentle, so I wrote a little drabble for taking a bird's nest home. He really is careful and passive, at least when Chris is in control X3
Chris couldn't help but muse "It was a dark and stormy night" to himself as he moved through the backyard, a shadowy wraith among the plants. This is because it was, a violent storm ripping its way through the heavens, and the demonized Kratt was currently checking around the house to make sure everything was secure. Doing so in his "Shade" form just seemed like a good idea, to keep himself from being accidentally injured (or struck by lightning); as it was nearly the night itself, he felt relatively safe as he moved around the yard.
However, other things weren't so lucky and it was a cracking sound above the thunder that drew him up short with a terrible shiver. An immediate glance back at the house, but it was okay. A repeat of the noise drew his head around and he watched a branch rip away from its moorings and plummet for the ground. Chris started for the porch when a thought pulled him up again, and he redirected his path for the branch as he remembered something he and Fluttershy had learned recently.
There was a bird's nest in that tree.
Rushing over, hoping and praying it hadn't been affected by the storm, Chris sought out the branch and looked it over hastily. With a trickle of dread he saw the remainders of a nest, then sighed in relief at the sight of baby birds inside, shaken but alive. He looked up at the shadow of the tree against the storm; no sign of the parent. Using a touch more gentle than might be expected for the shadow form, he picked up the hatchlings and nesting material and spirited them away inside.
Thankfully the storm was one of the ones that came in hard but blew itself out fast, and by the time he returned outside it was little more than a soft rain. Only a glance or two was spared for the debris-scattered yard and then he moved on, set on his goal. The nest had been rebuilt inside between himself and Fluttershy, the material now lining an empty berry basket and the birds settled within. The continued usage of Shade had been decided after a short discussion, as it'd allow him to take the nest back with a great deal more stealth than either his normal self or the demon form beyond the shadow. So he held it in his hands as carefully as he could, stopping to sit on his haunches at the base of the original tree. A few moments of thought, and then the nest box was oh so tenderly placed in the grip of his fangs. Digging his claws into the tree, he began to climb.
He periodically checked on the baby birds, and though they were quiet and hunkered down, he found himself worrying each time if they were more stressed than anything else. But he continued moving upwards, knowing that delivering them back to their parent was the biggest imperative.
The remains of the old nest site wasn't too hard to find, and thankfully there was another sturdy branch nearby, sheltered from (normal) rain as the old one had been. Chris pulled himself up and, with all the tender care of a mother cat placing her kitten in its bed, nestled the basket in the crook of the branch. He tied on the wires they had attached to it and then climbed down, just another shadow on the tree.
Fluttershy was waiting for him on the back porch and together they settled to watch the nest. It was some time, but the baby birds' chirps preceded the tell-tale flutter by mere moments, and it was relief that the two creature rescuers saw the adult bird return to the nest and settle in. The two of them rose from their seat and turned to head inside, as the swift clouds in the sky continued to blow past, taking the storm away with them and leaving behind misted sunlight.
