6 Reasons Why You Will Fall in Love with WKU Football
WKU is 10-2, bowl eligible, C-USA East Division Champs, and 3 days away from playing in the C-USA Championship game. I have shamed fair-weather fans and listed every possible reason why someone should go to a WKU Football game. My work here is done, right?
I cannot fix the Cay-uts/WKU hybrid fans. I cannot convince lazy bums that 11AM is NOT the crack of dawn. I can write post after post, but, not even then, will it fix those poor, lost souls. So who do I address? Who do I convince to go to a WKU Football game?
This sounds simple. Too simple.
Q: Who goes to WKU Football games?
Q: Who does not go to WKU Football games?
A: Cay-uts fans. People who do not care or do not understand football.
I sat here thinking “Why should someone who does not care and/or not understand football go to a game?” Then I started thinking, “When was my first WKU Football game? What prompted me to keep coming back?” Fans of any sort start somewhere: whether your parents were fans, you attended the school, or the team/school is located in your town.
There is that tender moment when someone who is not a fan becomes a fan. It is like never having ice cream, then tasting it for the first time: you immediately love it. So just why should someone who does not care and/or not understand football go to a WKU Football game? What will make them become a fan and love WKU Football?
Here are 6 Reasons Why You Will Fall in Love with WKU Football
You know the feeling. You are pumping gas, you hear the *click*, you look up at the price, and you pumped a perfectly, round, whole price of $20.00...not $19.78, not $20.01...but $20.00. Ahhhhh the sweet satisfaction. That is how it feels to watch WKU Football.
It is when Doughty throws a beautiful touchdown to one of his many receivers:
Or when Schwettman kicks an extra point or field goal and it soars perfectly center between the uprights.
Or just when it looks like Higbee does not have any more room to run, and he drags 3 defenders with him across the end zone:
Or when Nick Holt gets two interceptions.
Or when Wonderful Terry gets a pick-6:
Or when Nick Norris receives the ball and goes 10...no 15...no 25...no 35 yards for a touchdown:
Even if you do not understand football, you will be entertained. Aside from the game, itself, picture this occurring at the same time:
Fire as the team enters the field
Big Red (aka the BEST mascot) shaking his butt and eating pompoms
The band is playing good music and cheering louder than the student section
Fans dancing for the camera
A raffle for a Corvette or a contest for free tuition for a semester
You will find something enjoyable.
**On a side note - ummm, I miss the fireworks and cannons after a touchdown.**
Moonlite BBQ, Steamers, and Sonic. Not only will you watch a great game, you will be well-fed. Big Red Skillet, Gumbo, Shrimp Basket, Baja Fish Tacos, BBQ sandwich...is your mouth watering yet?

There is something just plain ‘ole neat about watching future professional players. You get to see them before they go big. You get to witness part of the journey.
Since we are playing Southern Miss. this week, I think it is appropriate to use the following example:
I am willing to bet plenty of Southern Miss. alumni or people from Hattiesburg, MS who did not watch Southern Miss football back in 1987-1990 regret not doing so. Why? They missed the opportunity to watch Brett Favre before he went pro...before he became a legend. They cannot say “I saw Brett Favre play before he became one of the best quarterbacks ever.”
I guarantee you will regret not watching Doughty, Higbee, and Taylor, just to name a few.
6. WKU Football is putting Bowling Green on the map
Bowling Green is not exactly New York City, Miami, Chicago, or Nashville. Us Bowling Greenians have heard it all of our life “Bowling what?...Where is Bowling Green?...Is there anything in Bowling Green?”
Yes, there are some things in Bowling Green (aka BG).
Aside from being the only place in the world to make the most famous sports car (Corvette), Bowling Green is home to the beloved Hilltoppers. And thanks to WKU Football, people are hearing a little bit more about Kentucky’s 3rd largest city.
By attending a game, you are not just supporting athletics or WKU, you are supporting Bowling Green. The city, normally, does not get to host many events as big as the C-USA Championship, but thanks to the football team, Bowling Green now has the opportunity. It is good for the economy (hotels, restaurants, shopping, etc.), and it makes WKU/Bowling Green look great to [hopefully] have a full stadium when people are watching on ESPN.
The community comes together for a common goal. Revenues pump in to the University that help mold model citizens. Revenues help the downtown/campus renewal and expansion. [With the KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl on the same weekend] Local HS teams will enjoy seeing a community involved and potentially help the recruitment of the students and student-athletes.
When you attend a WKU Football game, you are helping Bowling Green.
By the end of a game, I guarantee you will look like this cat:
You have an opportunity to fall in love with WKU Football on Saturday, 12/5 at 11:00am. Be there.
