ok i need to actually unironically talk about the blood pool thing because the blood pool is INSANELY funny but the point of it isn't that rui is going "i did this and now people think i'm weird! what the hell is up with that?!" in fact in like the next few seconds after mizuki talks about it he literally says "yeah when i was doing shit like that it's no wonder people thought i was weird lol that was crazy as hell". in fact the reason he even had mizuki give the anecdote in the first place is so he could go "yeah that guy was wild'n out lmfao".

edit: the blood pool incident is rui dyeing a pool red and floating an anatomical model in it sorry i forgot to give context lmfao

but like...rui did try to just be as polite and normal as he could possibly manage. for years. and when he did do weird things his thought process was "i am sharing my interest with others and being as safe as i possibly can about it. surely it will be fine" and then it wasn't and people actively started thinking that he wanted to hurt others with malicious intent and he STILL got ostracized.

the blood pool incident was, in essence, "alright you know what fine. i give. it's either suppress who i am harder or just do what i want as i damn well please. and i'm going to do as i damn well please because everyone thinks i'm a freak anyway so what's the point in hiding it". do you honestly think rui doesn't know that the blood pool thing was a weird thing to do? of course he did. and he could've definitely Not Done It because it's weird and crazy and would scare people...

...but he defaults to the assumption that he'll scare people or push them away no matter what he does, and people will assume malicious intent regardless, so who cares?

like yes the blood pool thing is objectively funny and i love him for doing it and also it is an incredibly important bit of characterization that supports what else we learn about him, which is that he put on a brave face about the idea that he was better off doing things alone in order to protect his heart, even when someone offered him an out. it is part of his way of telling himself "i don't care anymore" when it is so clearly not true. yes even something as batshit insane as rui DYEING A POOL RED AND PUTTING AN ANATOMICAL MODEL IN IT BECAUSE HE WAS LIKE "i like this idea let's fucking do it" is worth analyzing sorry chat
