                  𝑯𝒀𝑴𝑵𝑺 𝑬𝑪𝑯𝑶 𝑻𝑯𝑹𝑶𝑼𝑮𝑯 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑪𝑯𝑼𝑹𝑪𝑯,      the choir illuminated by the sun pouring through stained glass.   their voices resonate within her chest,   sparking bittersweet emotions.   she’s not here for the service,   though to confess to her sins wouldn’t be the worst thing.   no,   she’s here,   like she is every sunday,   to pay her respects to varos.   slate hues stare into the flickering light of the candles,   drowning in their warmth.   she removes a stick from the ornate glass container,   setting aflame a single unlit wick.   she’s almost entirely lost in the memory of varos that she almost doesn’t notice the man who approaches her,   standing next to her as he too watches those flames.    ❛    sorry,   am i in your way ?    ❜

he  will  never  know  this  pain .  after  the  first  war ,  roderich  had  fancied  that  he  knew  what  being  ripped  apart  felt  like ;  when  all  you  hear  are  your  people ,  suffering ,  wanting  more  ----     &    you  cannot  give  them  more .   he  had  promised  himself  he  would  no  longer  be  a  coward    (    &  that  was  long  ago ,  centuries  now ,  when  wars  were  still  fought  with  swords ,  when  all  of  them  had  spats    &    then  cleaned  themselves  up    &    went  on  to  live    &    to  love    )   ,  that  he  would  stand  but  he  could  not .  he  could  not    &    now  his  betrayal    (    a  betrayal  so  characteristic  to  him ,  so  overdone --- with  spain    &    italy    &    france    &    now  with  his  own    )     has  come  to  bite  him  back . 

he  is  silent ,  for  the  moment .  he  knows  franz  does  not  want  to  hear  him  speak ,    &    he  does  not  blame  him  for  it .  the  tears  catch  him  off  guard ;  roderich  does  not  know  how  to  deal  with  crying .  comfort  comes  so  unnaturally  to  him ,  even  after  years    &    years  of  looking  after  those  who  came  under  the  rule  of  his  emperors ,  of  his  archdukes .  he  remembers  standing  for  the  anschluss ,  he  remembers  signing ,  he  remembers  fainting  from  the  effort  of  it    &    he  realises . . .  he  realises  that  he  will  never  feel  what  franz  did . 

roderich  sinks  to  his  knees .  he  can  feel  the  spilt  wine  seep  into  his  pressed  trousers  as  he  touches  franz ’ s  knee  with  a  bare  hand .  he  has  worn  gloves  ever  since  wars  riddled  his  fingers  calloused .    ❛      i  will  not  apologise .         ❜      he  says ,  softly ,  once  the  sobs  have  quietened .     ❛     i  will  not  apologise  because  you  are  right ,  i  am  not  sorry .  i  am  not  sorry  i  survived .  i    am    sorry  you  had  to  bear  the  weight  of  both  our  guilts  but  i  am  not ----          ❜         he  cannot  be  sorry  for  surviving ,  for  not  bearing  the  scars  he  is  so  afraid  of .     ❛      i  said  i  would  not  be  the  same  as  i  was  when  it  was  1683 ,  but  i  lied .         ❜      

he  lays  his  head  on  franz ’ s  knee ,    &    tries  not  to  cry .  tears  feel  so  false  to  him ,  somehow ,  after  witnessing  the  other ’ s .  what  has  roderich  to  cry  for ,  if  he  has  not  felt  half  the  loss   ?        ❛       i  do  love  you .   how  can  i  ever  love  anyone ,  or  anything ,   other  than  you   ?         ❜

CHARACTER IN GENERAL:   i am gonna talk abt franK (<3) here bc i love him, he is perfect & tired & everything i can lowkey identify with. tho eventually i have to get to know the rest uwuHOW THEY PLAY THEM:   listen i love vienna bc it is the best city, so if you didn’t do it well, i would not approve. you are great babeTHE MUN:   11/10 would die for, you may have my first born
