I love your jujutsu Kaisen posts, you and @wellnoe literally have had so many thoughts I had reading/watching the series but had never seen them discussed in fandom. Reading your guys’s posts is always so fun and interesting.
Who are your top 5 favorite and least favorite characters and why?
OH MY GOD I never answered this, sorry.
Ahaha, I am glad Brenna and I are bringing the interesting thoughts! I don't think my interpretation is always the only one, but a lot of the stuff I say does seem like it should be a layer that is considered!
Ooh okay, favorite characters. I am gonna say that my top four characters have been my favorites from pretty early on, and they just rotate depending on what I've been feeling lately.
Maki!!!!! My current blorbo par exellence. I just really enjoy how she's abrasive and a jerk and also narratively right much of the time. She has such interesting relationships and parallels with other characters--that whole Zen'in tangle was one of the first aspect of JJK to really take me in. Her child abuse revenge narrative is really satisfying. Also yeah, her fights slap. The joy of seeing her in a sumo stance or when she throws Sukuna in Shinjuku Showdown? Hell yeaaaah! I want to put her in a jar and shake her.
Megumi. I love herrrrrr. I have a fondness for self-defeating repressed characters. I've said to Brenna before that if I read JJK as a teenager, I would have identified with Megumi the most. A character who wants very much to accept that life is unfair but cannot is so compelling to me. Like Maki, she exists at this fascinating confluence of jujutsu society repressive structures.
Yuta. This is Brenna's favorite character! He took a while to grow on me, but by his Sendai Culling Games fight, I was IN. Akutami plays this fun little trick with writing him where his heroism in JJK 0 becomes cast in a dire light when he reenters the narrative because it makes him a part of jujutsu society. Guy who is so nice and loving and constantly lying to himself and everyone around him!
Gojo. Gooooojooooooooo! He is at the center of what JJK is trying to say in some ways. Poster boy for their evil eugenics society who is Like That because he was raised being told he's the specialest boy in the world because he is naturally talented at violence. He is so funny and insufferable.
Hmm, I don't have a solid answer here. I might say Yuji, since his optimistic good-hearted character type works really well in a world where almost everyone is not that, and his character arc is all very clear and effective. Or Mai--of course, as a Maki fan, I have to care about Mai. Mean and petty and playing a losing game and she knows it! I also love Higuruma as an illustration of how unjust systems within and outside jujutsu society interact. You're here forever--no suicide for you!! And I also adore Kirara, who is just cute and funny and transgender and has a cool technique.
I'm not sure I really have least favorite characters. There are characters who I find repulsive, like Naoya, who are intended to be that way. There are also characters that are badly written, but I don't dislike them--I just kinda feel sorry for them.
Oh, actually, the answer is Kusakabe. I cannot fully explain my antipathy for him and I am aware I am one of the only people who feels this way, but it pisses me off so bad that he was a coward at Shibuya and then is a leader and plays the upstanding adult in Shinjuku. FUCK KUSAKABE. Give all his screen time to Shoko.
