Q11: What is the weirdest, coolest, or creepiest social custom or worldbuilding aspect of your setting? (Feel free to give one of each, if you'd like!)
I’m not really sure about what these fall under, but I’ll talk about the few customs that I’ve actually got more than just a general idea about.
I think one of my favourite customs is the custom of prayers to Quall. Most deities have a preference for how their prayers are delivered; for Quall all prayers must be sung. The more pleasant the song the more likely the prayer is to be granted, so sirens are heavily sought out. Not only are their voices/musical talents ethereal but they often have a gift for composition. This custom is why sailors and pirates sing seafaring songs, often doing so even when on land to appease Quall in the hopes of an uneventful voyage.
Talismans are a bit of a creepy custom. Deities bind a piece of their soul to the item in question, and those items often make them unable to refuse any feasible request. It’s not something many deities do, but for those who struggle to maintain their power it’s often a necessity. A talisman will significantly boost a prayers power, but it does so by drawing energy from the mortal wielding it, shortening their life in the process. This is not a fact that usually gets passed along to the mortals who wield them though.
