Review of Grouplove’s Big Mess
Only being their third studio album, Grouplove has already made a mark on indie rock with their eclectic yet particular sound in their newest album Big Mess. The title is representative of the chaos surrounding the album, and we can see the fusion of sounds in each of the tracks as having their own exciting character.
The opening track “Welcome To Your Life” sets the stage for introducing us to the album and reveals a variety of sounds that allows the group to set themselves apart from the typical radio rock band. The track reveals both the difficulty and beauty of life, a theme that can be seen throughout the rest of the album.
I have listened to this album a numerous amount of times and I have not yet become tired of it. The distinct harmonies of each song come together as a whole when you listen to the piece all the way through. While “Do You Love Someone” and “Good Morning” show off the classic, exciting sound of Grouplove, “Standing in the Sun” and “Enlighten Me” reveal a softer side that tugs at the heart strings.
The great thing about Big Mess is that it is diverse, yet every song still sounds like Grouplove. It is unique both lyrically and melodically, for it focuses on the mess of emotions that are a part of life but still continues to be a great album that you can just jam out to.
I think that there is always room for improvement, but I would have to say this is my favorite album by Grouplove so far. The band has evolved from being a one hit wonder due to their song “Tongue Tied”, and they have shown their growth by releasing a unique album that anyone could enjoy.
