Hi I have a question! I am studying German in university, and I was wondering if maybe you could help explain the usage and means of what my book calls the "da and wo compounds". (dafuer, wofuer, daran, woran, etc). I understand that the construction is Wo/da and a preposition, but I am mostly confused by usage and when you should use which one. Thanks!
The explanations in this tag should make things clearer: http://germannn.tumblr.com/tagged/da-compounds
Wo-compounds work just like da-compounds, but they are always interrogatives.
Example:
Lisa spielt mit ihrem Ball. = Lisa is playing with her ball.
Sie spielt mit ihm. = She is playing with it.
Now another way to say "mit ihm" in this case is "damit": Sie spielt damit.
Womit spielt sie? = What is she playing with?
You can find another good explanation here (INCLUDING the meanings of all da- and wo-compounds).
I hope this helped. If you're still confused and have a more explicit question, don't hesitate to ask again.
