I find it super interesting how many tribes have been confirmed to believe in reincarnation. SkyWings and MudWings (books 8 and 16 respectively), and if I remember right, Kinkajou mentions it in passing once.

There's a really good video on the topic but I can't find it...

Anyways Peril explains specifically that SkyWings let their dead rest somewhere high up so they're reincarnated as a SkyWing in their next life.

Kestrel knew that her dragonets probably wouldn't be given that treatment, because 1. Scarlet and 2. Fireless/firescales. So Kestrel, who was unaware both of her dragonets survived and only ever found one of them, probably thought they could have been reincarnated as a lesser tribe. Maybe even as something non-dragon entirely!

This could add onto her dislike of non-skywings, and also her reluctant acceptance of them, in the off chance she finds her reincarnated dragonets.

What if she hadn't lost them, though?

I think, had Peril and Sky been raised by Kestrel, Peril would be a bit like Flame, and Sky might be a bit like Swordtail.

I like to imagine Kestrel would've been a decently good mother, if it weren't for the incident. She'd still be a bit aloof but she'd care for her dragonets a lot. Maybe she'd still join the Talons of Peace, but this time so that Scarlet couldn't find the twins.

Anyways this yap is going nowhere so I'm gonna leave it at that.

My favorite fanfiction excersise for the prophecy arc is picking one of the guardians and seeing how many tweaks I need to make to canon to turn them into functional child minders. For me I've found Webs easy to manipulate like playdoh (probably because Coral had him assigned as a hatchery attendant until shit hit the fan with the discount weeping angel), Kestrel harder plot wise and Dune complicated. I do prefer canon Kestrel to anything I've come up with yet, but definitely prefer my take on Webs and find myself editing canon Webs over to fit him while reading.

I find Kestrel to be a really interesting character. I'd love to see your take on her :)

I’ve drawn Kestrel before but had to redesign her since I’ve changed the dragon taxonomy. Not many new headcanons for her, expect for instead of having her front talons being burned and cared (because SkyWings don’t have them anymore), Kestrel has pretty severe burns across her back talons where she tried to grab Peril. The burn is pretty severe, she lost most felling in her legs and a couple of her claws had to be removed lest they cause her infection.

Overall I just made her spikier, which adds to her scary and threatening energy.
