I think the studio is getting very, very close to nailing down the Space Wolf aesthetic. Good design continuity with Ragnar's update. Feeling positive about the eventual Wolf Guard Terminator refresh, whenever that happens to be.

Imho first noticed that he was warmer than he had ever been since boarding the ship. The blankets were thick and heavy. Next he noticed legs touching his own.

He lifted his head from under the covers to see Yggris at the other end of the bed, drooling. He hadn’t stirred. Imho sat up and rubbed his eyes as he yawned. This bed was massive and he blinked, trying to recall his current surroundings.

He didn’t recognize this room and it was lit by a few dim floor lights and some candles. He recalled the night before. The night terrors and nightmares. Waking up to screaming and screaming himself.

He had panicked and Yggris had grabbed him and drug him to the corner out of the chaos before the priests arrived. Then the Primarch showed up. Leman Russ.

He had been so close to him that he could smell the pelt on his back and the faint smell of alcohol. It wasn’t bad. He took good care of the pelt. It was just the distinct smell of fur. He wasn’t sure where that fearlessness and boldness came from. Throne save him he was terrified. Some things he said had mortified him. He had been sure he would have been struck then and there.

But the sixth legion Primarch did no such thing. He was kind and empathetic. It made hating him harder.

He swung his legs out of bed and noted how sore and achy he felt. He rubbed a shoulder and tried to stretch his neck.

He shook it off and went to the door. Another yawn took over as the door slid open and he entered the apothecarium.

“… and that is why it’s not healing properly,” one wolf priest said to another neophyte. “I know it’s exciting to let instincts run wild along with rage in the training cages but this suture needs to heal or there will be complications.”

The space wolf neophyte slumped.

“Yes Heppni,” he sighed. “How long again?”

“Three weeks.”

“Three weeks! You said two weeks last time!”

“But now you’ve strained and damaged it so a longer recovery time is needed,” Heppni scolded. “You are so eager to become a blood claw that you’re delaying it with your actions.”

Scanning the room, there was no sign of Finnja.

Heppni caught sight of him, “Looking for Finnja? He’ll be back in a moment. Do you want to wait in the dorms for him?”

Imho shook his head, suddenly feeling very shy. He stood near Finnja’s station.

He swallowed the familiar feeling of anxiety. He scolded himself. He was getting attached to the wolves.

But what choice did he really have? He couldn’t right back against them forever. It was either death or join them at this point. How long could he even hold out?

Did the other two wiped legions get integrated into other legions as well?

He rubbed his forehead and shivered. It was freezing again.

He heard the entrance open. He was hopeful but felt his stomach drop. Several legionaries had entered and some blood claws. He recognized a few. Their angry faces were etched into his mind along with blood and fire. Seeing his people and brothers be slain. Holding him against the wall and carving symbols into his skin.

He moved himself behind the table and turned away from the group. He tried to still his breathing.

The group began speaking to Heppni. He gripped his chest as his hearts pounded. The newly replaced one ached. He slowly sunk to the floor. He needed to calm down.

“Are you alright?” A voice asked.

He froze as he heard footsteps approach the table.

“Little brother?” The wolf questioned as he came around.

Imho quickly crawled to the otherside, desperate to avoid them.

“Hang on little brother,” the wolf said. “You’re not in trouble.”

He dove to the other table and crawled behind it. There was a cart with several instruments on it. One had been polished very well and he could see the warped reflection of a blood claw. One who had caught him outside. Had held him up while the other used the knife.

He held still as the blood claw looked around confused.

“Little brother?” The Blood Claw questioned. “Pup?”

Go away. Go away. Leave me alone. Leave. Leave. Please leave. It’s none of your business. Go. Go. Go!

He willed his thoughts, letting small psychic waves pulse out with them till the blood claw shrugged and went back to the group.

Imho stilled his breathing and started to crawl around on the otherside. He just needed to get back to Finnja’s station and wait for him.

Hands hit the table above him and he yelped.

“There you are!” The Blood claw said. “What are you doing hiding?”

Imho scrambled back as the blood claw approached.

Recognition crossed his face.

“You,” he said. “You’re that-“

Another other blood claw came up.

“Are you hazing another neophyte?” The other asked.

Imho could still see the knife in his hands.

“You know that-“ he stopped as he saw Imho.

He glared, “What are you doing here?”

Imho quickly stood and started to back up.

Heppni was his saving grace, “you’d better not be hazing the new neophytes!”

The first whipped around, “We’re not! I swear!”

“You be careful,” Heppni warned. “Finnja will get pissed if you mess with his pup.”

They looked back at him.

“Finnja’s,” the second muttered.

“What are you two doing?” Heppni asked.

“Just saying hello to our… new brother,” he answered.

Heppni huffed, “You’d better be. The Jarl himself sanctioned them and even came to meet the newest recruits last night. He’s accepted them into the pack. I suggest you do the same or there’ll be consequences. Back up. You’re scaring him.”

The blood claws did so, taking a few steps back. Imho was already up against the wall. He kept his eyes trained on them. He could feel the sharp blade diving in and out of his skin. He could feel large hands grabbing him and cutting off his airway.

Both of them stared at him. One still glaring.

“Should have burned them all with the rest of the planet,” the glaring one scoffed.

The cuts they gave him burned as he lost control of his mind and attempted to cause them pain. But nothing happened.

Fear rocketed through him a they realized what he tried to do. They looked like they were about to lunge at him.

Heppni was suddenly next to both of them, grabbing each by and ear and pulling away.

“Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!” They cried out.

“Back up!” Heppni snapped. “Stop terrorizing him. I swear you have heads thicker than Kraken hide! You don’t need to be over here.”

Imho let out a breath he was holding. He was incredibly grateful for the Wolf Priest.

He tried to still his breath as he moved back to Finnja’s table.

Heppni finished with the group and sent them out. He came over to check on Imho.

“Are you good?” He asked.

Imho nodded.

The priest looked like he wanted to ask more but he didn’t press.

Imho slid back against the table and began to cry.

Heppni patted his forehead, “Let me go get Finnja.”

Imho slumped onto the floor.

He was stuck on this forsaken ship with the very ones who had just destroyed his home and exterminated his people. Then the ones who had hurt him were here.

Why hadn’t the mind will worked? Or when he lost it?

He reached up and pulled a tool off of the table and focused on it.

Come on. Bend it. Just bend. This was such an easy thing to do! He’d been doing it since he was a toddler. He could remember his mother scolding him for ruining the various utensils.

The tool didn’t budge. His cuts burned.

He slowly set the tool back and covered his mouth.

He couldn’t use his powers. Something as wrong.

He began silently sobbing. Wiping away tears with his palms and rubbing snot on his sleeve.

Large and warm arms picked him up and held him close to their chest.

He coughed and gasped with each sob. Finnja rubbed his back, trying to soothe him.

“There, there,” he said. “Just breathe.”

Imho gripped Finnja’s hair, letting snot get into it.

“What happened?” Finnja asked him.

He just hiccuped, unable to calm down or form words.

“Take your time,” The wolf told him. “Speak when you’re ready.”

A task harder than anticipated. Each time he seemed to let it subside, more grief cascaded down. He’d be back to a crying mess.

The priest sighed as he wiped away tears. He brought Imho to his room and tucked him into the bed.

Yggris was already gone.

A cup of water was brought to him and Finnja sat on the floor, stroking Imho’s head.

Imho squeezed his eyes shut and pulled the blankets close to him. He barely noticed falling asleep again.

Wolf Priest, Mark Gibbons, 2nd Edition

The Wolf Priests are the most respected of Space Wolves leaders, having such influence that even the greatest of Wolf Lords step aside at their passing. They are the custodians of the Chapter’s tradition—genetic, spiritual, and physical. The Wolf Priests decide who is worthy to endure the change into a Space Wolf and take accountability for the Brethrens’ headway through the echelons from Blood Claw to Long Fang and beyond. They scrutinize their charges for signs of the Curse of the Wulfen and administer the last rites over a Battle-Brother’s remains should he fall in battle. In essence, the Wolf Priests combine the roles and responsibilities carried out in other Chapters by Chaplains and Apothecaries, yet the rank is far more than the sum of these two parts. To the Space Wolves, the Canis Helix is the direct inheritance of their Primarch, his blood pumping through their veins as his spirit and courage swells their savage souls. The Wolf Priests administer to body and soul as a whole, for to them, both are the same.

In battle, the Wolf Priests serve as living embodiments of all their Chapter stands for: black-armored incarnations of death whose very presence drives their charges onwards to ever-greater feats. Their battle cries resound across the battlefield, filling the hearts of the Space Wolves with savage joy and those of the enemy with unfettered terror. Should a Space Wolf fall, a Wolf Priest is there at his side, the Fang of Morkai ready to extract his progenoid so that his legacy is secured.

Given their role as wards of the bodily and spiritual health of the Space Wolves, it is a rare thing indeed for a Wolf Priest to join the ranks of the Deathwatch. Yet, the Chapter was present at the Conclave of Orphite IV, and the Apocryphon Oath means as much to the Sons of Russ as to any other of the Chapters that ratified the conclave. Space Wolves have been undertaking the Long Watch for millennia, so how might a Wolf Priest instruct and guide his charges if he too has not done so? A rare few Wolf Priests take the Apocryphon Oath, often early in their careers, in order that they might become adept at fighting the many foes the Deathwatch must face. In the ranks of the Deathwatch, the Wolf Priest faces enemies he might never otherwise have encountered, and in so doing earns great wisdom to pass on to his charges on his return to his Chapter. In accepting a Wolf Priest into his Watch Fortress, a Watch Commander gains the services of an individual of unique skill and ability. His knowledge of both the apothecary’s arts and the duties of the Chaplain are of course valuable, but there is far more to it than that. The greatest of Wolf Priests are able to extend their ministrations to all of the Battle-Brothers they serve alongside, inspiring each and every one to epic deeds of courage worthy of the greatest heroes of the Space Wolves and of the Adeptus Astartes as a whole.
