You know what? I was wrong. You never really meant anything to me. You’re broken, you’re beyond fixing, you’re not something I want to take the time to handle. Simple as that.”
Words like how could you say that? and you can't possibly mean that shriveled up and died behind Wolfgang's mouth before he even got a chance to get them out. Not that it mattered, because Airiel was already giggling too loudly to hear anything he'd have any hope of saying as she phased away, wiggling her fingers and wrinkling her nose adorably as if she hadn't just shattered his heart into a million pieces. Finding out she was cheating on him with Ambrose was one thing, and it wasn't like he hadn't been dumped by Airiel before anyway, but that Airiel, the real Airiel, hadn't taken sadistic pleasure in beating him down. She had cried with him, her heart broken that she'd had to break anybody's heart. Back then, he thought that was the worst thing that could ever happen to him, but he'd taken her kindness for granted and now it was gone forever; thanks to his foolishness and pride, he'd wished away one of the nicest people to ever exist and replaced her with a brunette monster who got off on torture and pain.
Tears silently rolled down his face as the harsh truth sank in. He'd been such a dog with a bone about keeping Airiel even when she didn't want him anymore, and for what? To wish up a universe where she hated the guy she left him for? Why had he even wanted to win her if it was in that way? It was cruel to tear her from her own choices and her own soulmate, and Wolfgang was certain that Faelix was her soulmate now; after all, the only way to create a world where she didn't love him was a world where she was changed into a completely different person, one with dark hair and a darker appetite for murder. Poor Faelix had already been killed, the first casualty to Wolfgang's moronic behavior. It was only a matter of time before more students joined him in the grave, especially since the specter who called herself Airiel was teamed up with a heartbroken Ambrose who was unhinged and on the rampage. It made Wolfgang shudder just to think about it.
Just because she was evil didn't mean she was wrong though. Maybe Wolfgang was broken. Why else would he go to the lengths he had to keep somebody that he thought made him seem whole? He had turned himself into a blackmailer, a liar, a gaslighter. He'd lost his best friend, the real Airiel, and worst of all, himself. The only thing he'd gained was a friend in Aurora, but even that was limited, since they'd gotten close during the era of Brunette Airiel and she'd demanded Wolfgang spend as little time as possible with "girl friends". He had to admit that he may have been starting to have feelings for the wolf girl, but he never would've acted in them. Airiel had actually been cheating herself though, and had just for all intents and purposes had just dumped him completely, so he found himself moving towards Aurora's dorm before he even fully comprehended that that's where he was headed. She was the only person that made him feel that he wasn't a completely lost cause these days and he needed to see her maybe more than he'd ever needed to see anybody in his life.
Her door was already open and he walked in without a second thought, ready to see the brightest spot in the darkest timeline. What he wasn't ready to see was her lifeless body lying on her bed, her heart resting on a pile of blood on her chest. "Aurora!" Wolfgang yelled, at her side in a matter of microseconds, but it was too late; she smelled of death and her open eyes were looking past him, forever past him. A sob ripped out of his chest, mixing with a howl of utter and complete grief as he held her body in his arms, feeling her warmth fade. The tears he'd cried every time Airiel left him looked like nothing compared to this, and his pained howls echoed cruelly back at him as if reminding him that now, he was truly alone.
His nose twitched as it caught a familiar whiff in the room, something that had originally been covered by the stench of despair. Airiel. It had to be. His howls turned to growls and snarls and his arms gripped Aurora's body tight. He was right -- Faelix was just the start. Airiel wasn't even close to done. Wolfgang had no way of knowing that at the moment, even more monsters were falling prey to her wicked ways, or that in a few hours, the death count would rival a small war's. All he knew was that of all people, Aurora deserved to live, and that he would have given absolutely anything for a chance to make just one more wish.
