”.. Are you proposing to me?”
The first Valentine’s Day since Jabari and Kamilah had officially become a couple had unfortunately fallen on a Monday, so Jabari suggested that they take the entire weekend before off. They’d still have to go to class on the day of, but February 11th through the 13th were all theirs to do whatever they wanted. He offered to make all of the arrangements himself and Kamilah had agreed to being surprised, something for which he was grateful; he’d been trying really hard not to act too much like her guard or keeper since becoming her boyfriend, but he was still an acts of service person, and the urge to plan a mini-vacation down to the second was so strong.
First, he had to come up with a location, and New Orleans felt like a fun magic-centric capitol of the country with all sorts of sensory treats -- it wase also somewhere where, if they left Thursday night, he could get them there by Friday morning. The ScareBnb he’d rented them was nice and central to the town; he’d gotten a nicely furnished cozy feeling place with an extra bathroom and bedroom, mostly out of habit of not sharing a room but also just in case she needed her space. And then there were the meal plans. Kamilah was a great cook so he scheduled out some meals for her to handle, but New Orleans was also famous for its restaurants, so he had to make a few reservations, including to one of the more fancy places he could find. It was hard to find a reservation so suddenly but when he told them he was with an ex-pharaoh, suddenly the list cleared right up. They even got a table by the kitchen and an appointment with the chef to go over his menu with them, which foodie Kamilah would surely love.
There were also concerts for them to go to, and ghost tours led by some very friendly ghosts, and monster bars with ghouls who played jazz all night and made a mean cocktail. Friday night would be more casual, a tour followed by dinner at “home” in the BnB, but Saturday would be a big one. That was the day he’d gotten them into Broodsten’s. He’d excitedly made a voice memo letting Kamilah know what the schedule for the trip was, trying not to sound too excited about the “secret restaurant” that she should get “really dressed up for” on Day Two, but probably failing. It was nice though, to get to be so excited about being with Kamilah. And yes, he was a little bit terrified of the idea of taking her somewhere everyone was unverified, but he could stay vigilent. The normal amount of vigilent.
The fear that he wouldn’t be able to turn off his paranoia during the trip was quickly ameliorated by the simple notion of being there with Kamilah. From the moment they drove off with her sleeping in the passenger seat to him carrying her in his arms over the threshold of the ScareBnb as a way to christen the trip to cooking together that first night and getting to lay together as a couple without worrying about their third roommate, it was perfect. And when Saturday came and Kamilah appeared in front of him all dressed and ready to go to the restaurant, he swore his eyes started to water. He really was with the most beautiful person on the planet, and he told her so, and the smile he got from her only made her shine brighter. They were so gushy and coupley that by the time they got to the restaurant, even though it had been the part of the trip he was most looking forward to, Jabari almost wished they could go right back to the house so they could be just the two of them.
Still, the restaurant was spectacular. As soon as they had theiir champange, Jabari poured them both a glass and handed Kamilah hers. “To all the love in the world,” he cheersed, clinking his glass against hers and taking a sip.
Just then, Kamilah started choking, and all of Jabari’s defenses went up. He stood up harshly and was at her side in an instant. A waiter screeched to a halt next to them and Jabari pushed the waiter to the side, not sure if they were crowding them because they wanted to help or harm. Kamilah was choking and that was the only thing that mattered. It couldn’t have been the champagne or he’d be choking too, so it had to be something physical. He got up behind her and with a little bit of the Heimlich, got whatever it was out of her throat while the waiter he’d pushed got back up from the ground.
It was a piece of cork -- he saw it on the table and he felt embarrassed at how he’d reacted, but at least she was safe now. “Sorry,” he mumbled to the waiter as they walked away, and he tried to figure out what to say to Kamilah as he sat down across from her, but before he could, she asked if he was proposing and he blinked in confusion, the words knocked out from him as he realized why she must’ve thought that.
"No, no, it was a piece of cork, not a ring” Jabari explained. “You’d think this fancy restaurant would have a better bottle of champagne. But no, no, if I was proposing to you, I wouldn’t make the moment a choking hazard.”
He couldn’t tell if Kamilah looked disappointed or relieved that he wasn’t proposing right here and now, and it just now dawned on him that maybe she had thought this whole trip that a proposal was incoming. She bit her lip for a second and then asked how he would propose to her, and Jabari drank a sip of his champagne to pause, so he wouldn’t seem like he had an answer ready, even though of course he did. Once they got together, he knew that they would be forever, so a proposal would come in time. Just because he didn’t have it planned for two months after they were official didn’t mean he didn’t have it planed at all.
"Well...I think I'd keep it simple, honestly. Fill the place with your favorite flowers, play one of our favorite songs, and gather all your favorite desserts for afterwards. I love this, going out with you, but for our proposal, I'd want it to be just us somewhere private, like our home." Now that made her smile for sure, and that made him curious, so he just had to ask, "So... but if I had proposed tonight... what would you have said?"
We’re through. I don’t want to do this anymore.”
Dorian looked up at Isobel quizzically, the lyrics he’d been half-assing while plotting their next kill immediately forgotten. He didn’t like her tone almost as much as he didn’t like what she was saying, but since she was his best ally, he’d give her a chance to explain. “’We’re through’? No, love, I daresay we’re just beginning. Like I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, I am all but positive that the Sandman boy is Seraphina’s recycled soul-tether and I vote we act on it now. Waiting until her wedding every time is growing old and predictable, and even if we’re wrong, well, no one will miss him, will they? So let’s have some fun and rid the world of him tonight.”
He expected enthusiasm and excitement from his partner who was just as bloodthirsty as he was and even moreso sometimes; of all the reasons he valued Isobel, their shared bloodlust was one of his favorites. However, she looked bored bordering on hesitant which was just... odd. Dorian and Isobel had killed his heartless ex’s soulmate more than a few times now and she’d never reacted like this. “We could kill more people than just him tonight, if you’d like,” he suggested, thinking perhaps her problem with the plans was that she thought he was going soft. “Seraphina has some friends that we could take out as well while we’re at it.”
Isobel shook her head and turned away, reiterating that she didn’t want to do this anymore. When she emphasized that word, the this, Dorian first thought that, stupidly, she was referring to their band, and he thought it was an odd time for Isobel to try and quit Original Sin. Perhaps he’d been too distracted during band rehearsal by this murder plot and she’d grown tired of it? But no, the way she was looking at him made him think it might be something else. Did they even have another this?
That question was even stupider. Of course they had another ‘this’. They had a strange bond that was built on dreams of her that made meeting her eyes the next day difficult, on waves of silent understanding that flowed between them whenever their eyes met during carnal activities, on the words of the songs they sang to each other, on the way whenever they got too close his body’s first reaction was to both hold something too tight and to throw it as far away as he could. It was the same kind of bond he had been running from ever since someone he felt that strongly for had broken his heart once after dooming him to an eternity alone, and if he didn’t know that the way he had once felt Seraphina was the way he felt about Isobel now, her telling him that she wanted out certainly let him know.
Isobel wanted to leave him. Just like everybody else did.
“And I won’t let you go, so, appears we’re at a bit of an impasse, doesn’t it, Isobel?” he hissed. Dorian rarely used anybody’s name but calling her ‘love’ under the circumstances felt wrong. The idea of simply asking her to stay never even occured to him; forcing people came far more naturally, especially when he felt backed into a corner as he did now. “You can’t leave, I forbid it.”
He was fully yelling at her, and most other people would shrink away from it but Isobel didn’t. She stood up and demanded to know why she couldn’t leave, and something in the way she asked made Dorian think she already knew the truth -- that she was too important, too necessary, and not just because they were bandmates or best friends but because he needed her. Life made more sense when she was around. She’d made it fun for the first time in so long, and he wouldn’t know what to do with himself if he ever felt as alone again as he did before meeting her.
Damn it all if that gleam in her eye didn’t made him furious. Whether or not she did know why he cared so much, Dorian was now convinced that she did and was merely trying to force his hand, and that was unacceptable. He’d already folded a little bit by reacting so much to her wanting to leave; if he said anything else, it’d be giving her all the power, and it’d be admitting what he’d been dreading more than anything else -- that he’d fallen for somebody again. “Fine,” he spat, “if you don’t want to do this anymore, then what are you waiting for? Leave!” He grabbed the nearby guitar and threw it hard at her, missing on purpose but grinning at the satisfying crunch it made as it broke against a concrete wall. “If you’re not with me, you’re against me, so get out of here! And don’t let me see you again, because if I do? I will destroy you.” She stood for a moment and he screamed, letting out some of the pain by tossing the closest speaker to him that missed her head by just inches before splattering against the floor loudly and messily. “GO!”
And that was just how it had to be. Because even though a large part of him wanted to chase after her, or hoped she’d come back, Dorian knew that the only thing worse than being alone again would be loving someone and giving them the chance to kill him from the inside out.
You’ve been pouting ever since I went out on that date, what’s up?”
"I don’t do pouting," Blair protested, her features doing a thing that admittedly did kind of look like a pout to the untrained eye. Her forehead furrowed and her lips jutted out defiantly, but she couldn’t help herself. Every time she was rudely reminded of whatever the fuck was happening between Sireena and Tavi, it pissed her off, and it read all over her face. "And anyway, I thought you and Tavi were just sticking things into each other’s holes. Since when does anyone count that as dating?"
It was kind of a harsh thing to say when Blair knew that they were exclusively sticking things into each other. The whole situation made her pissed though and she didn’t know how to hide it. Even Sireena bringing up the fact that Blair had been weird since the “date” made it worse, because most people wouldn’t notice that surly Blair was extra down, but leave it to Sireena to tell the difference. She just got Blair in a way that a lot of people didn’t, and she loved music just as much too, and she was tough and hot and smart and awesome, and ever since they’d started O.M.E.N. together, Blair had been hoping that maybe, just maybe, some kind of showmance would happen.
She should’ve known that she and Sireena would never happen though. She hadn’t ever seen any visions of them together except for in her daydreams, and those didn’t count. And now Siravi or Taveena or whatever the fuck they wanted to called themselves were an official thing and it was beyond weird. And it wasn’t just her reacting, or at least, she didn’t think it was. Ever since they’d gone public, Molly had seemed kind of down too, and Ana, well, she was going through her own shit. Blair was terriied that their band wouldn’t surivive it all, but Sireena didn’t seem to share said concern. As long as she had Tavi’s tentacles to wrap around her tight, she seemed just fine.
It was infuriating to be stuck yearning like this. Blair tried so hard not to like people but every time she did, it went sideways for her. It had happened in high school with Wolfgang, it happened when hanging with him had made her fall hard for his sister Morrighan instead, and it was happening now, with her hottest band mate. At least she could channel it into creativity. Since the rest of the band seemed to be stuck in a rut, Blair tried to contribute by writing her own song, but 1) she sucked at song writing and 2) anyone reading it would be able to tell it was about Sireena. And that was unacceptable.
She ripped up the paper she’d been writing on, erasing evidence of the emotional ballad wailing about liking someone who didn’t see her that way for good. “Not everything’s about you, Sireena,” Blair lied. “I’m pissed because O.M.E.N. is falling to shit and nobody seems to care but me. Maybe you can try using some of your precious ‘date’ time to write new shit with your baby cakes instead, because I’m tired of carrying us all on my shoulders.”
“If you’re going to dress like that, I’m not going to let you out of my sight.”
Rosa widened her heavily lined dark brown eyes in faux-innocence, as if that wasn’t the precise reaction she was hoping to illicit with her outfit choice. The Dolce & Gabbana netted illusion bustier tulle dress was a slight departure from her typical style; D&G was a brand that she loved, but the all black look was a bit edgy in place of her go-to preppy look. The black tulle skirt was reminiscent of a ballerina tutu but paired with a see through bustier that showed off her boobs that she usually tried to hide and the netting that left all of her arms and most of her chest uncovered, as well as a dark lip and her long envied locks slicked straight back, she felt like a sexy dark dangerous version of herself. It was almost like playing dress up.
Weirdly, it also made Rosa feel a lot like herself in a way she didn’t often get to. The uber-rare black diamonds that she’d fashioned into earrings and a huge ring helped, of course, but there was some very strong Main Character Energy rolling off of her right now and she was obsessed with it. Normally she would’ve felt like she needed Diana’s approval to debut a new outfit anywhere, but right now, the only validation she needed was the way that this super hot vampire boy looked at her.
“What’s wrong? Is it the netting? Do you not like it” she asked, raising her hands to her neck and fingering the edge of the thin fabric. It showed off her long neck fabulously, as did her hairstyle, which she thought would be perfect for a vampire party. It was tantalizing, like fishnets except not tacky, and she hoped it would make Vlad go mad wanting to taste her, and if it made his vampire guy friends want to bite her too, well, that was fine by her. She didn’t want anyone but Vlad -- so much so that she’d had what could only be described as a two-and-a-half-way with Cassie who apparently wasn’t as uncool as she initially appeared -- but maybe his friends wanting to bite her would make him jealous and he’d sweep her away. After all, the best part of wearing this dress wasn’t just how fabulous and Dark Rosa it made her feel. It was the idea of Vlad ripping it off later.
She reached out her hand to him and he kissed it before they made their way out to the party and though she’d never want to be anything but a witch, there was something special about this feeling and this aesthetic. There was also something special about the fact that, since Diana wouldn’t be there tonight, there’d be no competition for the coolest girl at the party. For once, all eyes would be on Rosa, and her black diamonds that held a heavy charge of power and charisma and passion would keep it that way.

“This ain't for the best My reputation's never been worse, so You must like me for me
Sometimes I wonder; when you sleep Are you ever dreaming of me? Sometimes when I look into your eyes I pretend you're mine, all the damn time”
Finding people and latching onto them tight with her metaphoric claws was one of Tabby’s many specialities. She chalked it up to being forced to grow up with a family that was only a family by name. The people that shared her blood were crappy and flaky; she’d never tell anybody because it’d sound like she was fishing for sympathy, and she hated when people did that, but she had only seen her mom about three times since turning eighteen. All three of of those times had ended in a screaming match where her mom read her the riot act for being ‘out of control’ as if she was an expert in anything aside from having a litter of kids she wasn’t ready for and abandoning them, so Tabby avoided that woman like the plague.
It did mean that holiday season got a little tricky though. She’d been able to go with Morrighan to the Mooney Christmas these last couple of years but something told her that even if their friendship was on the mend, it was a little too soon to go home with her for the holidays. Pierre was staunchly on Team Morrighan and had barely talked to Tabby since Knot-Gate and her other best friend Molly had her own issues with her family that made a happy little Yo Christmas just about as impossible as a Purr one. Being stuck at a school where she was still the target for annoying ass were-rumors was the last thing she wanted but there wasn’t really much of an option, or at least she’d thought so until she got a text from Isaac.
The text wasn’t much -- it was just him checking in on her, really -- but it still made Tabby smile. It was weird how a small suggestion in who should be her escort to a Halloween party from Molly had turned into some random werecat boy becoming one of her better friends by the year’s end. She’d never given Isaac the time of day before, thinking him not cool enough for her, and now that she knew him better, she’d learned that yes, he wasn’t cool, but he was plenty of other good things. He was smart, obviously, but he was also a hustler, someone who wanted big things and had big dreams, just like Tabby did. He was judgemental in a fun way and sweet in a backwards way, and...
And thinking about how great he could be was becoming a weird habit. Tabby wrinkeld her nose at herself and texted him back that she was okay and just dreading the holidays alone. She hesitated for a second and then asked if he wanted to bring a friend home. She regretted it almost immediately, but that’s how it’d been with Isaac from the start. She’d been all too honest which was so beyond weird for Tabby, who liked to lie for fun and who ran from the truth like it was a cold dose of ice water. And when the three little dots popped up letting her know that he was responding, she held her breath like she was waiting to see if she’d passed the freaking MCAT or something. Since when was Isaac Mewton’s answer about anything that important?
“Motherfucker,” she hissed, turning the phone screen off so she couldn’t see what he responded. She didn’t want to look. Either he’d say no and Tabby’s heart would break at being rejected by him or he’d say yes and she’d have to spend the holidays with him pretending she didn’t just realize that she’d done fucked up and developed feelings somewhere along the lines. Was she really so vulnerable that him being nice to her when nobody else was made a fool out of her? Or was it because of something else? Some weird part of her that liked opening up to him in specific, that wanted to hear his particular spin on life. She didn’t want to know why this was happening, because even though she was completely hot and irresistable, she knew Isaac wouldn’t feel the same. Yes, he’d befriended her when most wouldn’t, but that was one thing. He knew her better than a lot of people did, so he knew exactly why Tabby was the absolute wrong person to date...
But she was always the best person to fuck. She was the best stripper, the best lay, the best person to not take seriously, and maybe if she’d gotten to a place where she actually thought she might be falling for Isaac, she was just fooling herself. Sure, Tabby’d been better later, but beneath it all, she was still Tabby. Tabby didn’t spend the holidays wishing the mild-mannered guy would take her home to meet his family. She was the kind of girl who’d get drunk or nail a stranger or all of the above... and so she stuffed her phone into her bra and got up, letting instincts take her to the nearest bar where she could just drink and forget all the reasons this year had been so weird.
Why is your hand on my ass?”
"Oh! I -- is it? Sorry, must've slipped," Fabian stuttered out, raising his hand to it's original spot on Diana's back, mourning the loss of the ass grab that had been mere seconds away. The truth was they'd been having fun at this party and he liked being cuddly with his girlfriend, and since she was his girlfriend, he didn't think she'd mind. If anything, he thought she would think it was cute and flirty and that it might even turn her on to have him subtly feeling her up. She'd wanted to have sex before they even went on a date, for crying out loud. He hoped that she would take it as the compliment it was, that he couldn't wait until they were alone to put his hands on her because she was just so irresistible. Instead, he was getting what he could only describe as a slight stink eye from her before Diana's friends came up and pulled her away.
He sighed wistfully as he walked off to find Gale and the other Bros. It was kind of annoying that the PC was such a unit; he totally understood the concept of having power in numbers but sometimes it felt like they were all still in middle school the way these parties split up to boys and girls straight down the middle eventually. When he finally found his bro, he was looking at the girls in the PC and with a sly Watch this, he snapped his fingers and some snow started falling on Poppy. She spun around looking for the culprit and when she and Gale met eyes, they started giggling together from across the room. It made Fabian ache with envy. Even though he was the one with an official girlfriend, it sure as hell didn't feel like it sometimes. Diana was cool and pretty and popular and surprisingly emotional beneath it all, but he just wanted to feel wanted and it was like she was embarrased to let herself want anything, including him.
Fabian wasn't too embarrased to want though, and ever since he and Diana had done stuff, he'd chosen to want her every day. He kept his gaze on her and stared as hard as he could, as if that would make her look his way too and they could have a moment like the one Gale had just had, but she was too busy brushing the snowflakes off of her shoulders like it was dandruff. Notice me, he thought as loudly as he could, NOTICE ME! See me! Want me! Love me! But Diana didn't turn his way once.
Cassie did though.
He stiffened, having forgotten that the new girl was a psychic. The corners of her lips were twitching, like she was fighting a smile, and she nodded a small but definitive nod. She'd heard the whole thing. A blush swarmed his cheeks and he mentally apologized to her and threw in the promise of a mixtapes so that she wouldn't tell Diana what she'd heard, and he didn't know how exact Cassie's powers were or not, but the smile she'd been fighting turned into a full one, and even as she helped Diana sweep off the extraneous snow that had landed on her outfit, Fabian could tell she would keep his thoughts secret. That was just the kind of person she was. He didn't know her too well but he didn't have to to know she was geniune and sweet and honest and beautiful. He was almost sad she'd traded in her overalls for a more standard powder blue bandage dress, but he had to admit her body looked amazing in it, and she wasn't just friends with the popular girls. She was friends with Chloe too, who might've been the most aggressively honest person Fabian had ever met. That said so much about her already.
A pang of regret smacked him in the face as he found himself wishing -- very quietly in case Cassie could still hear and sadly not for the first time -- that he'd manned up and made a move on the new girl like he'd wanted to. If he had, then the night with Diana would've never happened and he wouldn't have felt obligated to be her boyfriend. Humping and dumping anyone was just uncool, and she was the school's unofficial queen -- if he treated her that way, he'd never recover. So now he was stuck with a girlfriend who didn't like PDA, a huge crush on her new best friend who it felt like just understood him on a deep level that Diana never could, and zero idea as to what to do about it. All he could do was throw back the beer he'd been nursing and think bitterly to himself that Cassie probably would've let him grab her ass.
