After the conversation with Remus, Sirius began filling out applications. The only problem was that almost all applications were online and Sirius barely knew how to turn on Remus’ laptop. After accidentally changing the language on the laptop to French, deleting an entire application, and more begging than either of them would have liked, Remus finally agreed to fill out the applications and make a resume.
The applications and resume must have been quite impressive, for Sirius found himself getting ready for his third interview that week.
“Love, how do I look?” He called out as he admired himself in the mirror. Though he would have preferred a more casual outfit, Sirius thought he looked pretty good.
“The bank.” Remus repeated as he walked in the room.
“No it’s for the clothing store,” Sirius said as he continued to check himself out. When he turned around, Remus was chuckling with Harry on his hip. “What? Why’re you laughing?”
“Darling, you don’t need to wear slacks for this one.” Remus smiled as he strode over to the wardrobe. He quickly pulled a few things and tossed them on the bed before Sirius even had time to unbutton his shirt. When he looked up, Remus was already putting Harry on his other hip and trying to fix the unruly hair on the toddler’s head.
As Sirius looked at the clothes Remus pulled out, he frowned. It was a fairly casual outfit and all the other outfits had been more formal. He had yet to receive a callback from either of the other jobs, one being a receptionist and the other at a bank, and the last thing he wanted was for the interviewer to use his appearance as a reason to turn down the job.
“You don’t think it’s too casual?”
“Pads, it’s a black shirt, black jeans, and black boots. What more do you want?”
“Dunno, it’s a bit plain—”
“It’s for an interview, it’s not supposed to be flashy!”
“Love, it’s for a clothing store,” Remus explained as Harry yawned into Remus’ shoulder. Normally, he would be down for his morning nap, but he insisted on seeing Uncle Pads before his interview. “The other ones were for office jobs. This one is a more casual job, it’s seeing the public and stuff.”
Sirius slowly nodded as he looked down at the outfit. Without saying a word, he quickly changed and as he followed Remus out of the room, he grabbed one of Remus’ flannels. He looked at himself in the mirror one last time before finally leaving the room.
“Call me once it ends,” Remus reminded him as Harry curled into his chest.
“I’ll be home once it ends,” Sirius rolled his eyes. He quickly kissed both of his boys and apparated before Remus could nag him even more.
He arrived a bit early, but he didn’t mind and preoccupied himself with browsing the clothing. Even if he didn’t get the job, he’d have to keep the store in mind when shopping for muggle clothes in the future. As soon as the clock struck eleven, he made his way to the cash register where a woman was standing. She seemed to be a bit older than Sirius and shot him a wide smile that immediately relaxed his shoulders.
“Hi, I’m Sirius. I have the eleven o’clock interview,” He said loudly over the music.
“Vicki,” She nodded, “I’ll let Matt know you’re here.”
She quickly left before Sirius had a chance to thank her. As he looked around, his eyes found one of the monitors. It played a music video, Sirius couldn’t remember which one, but the bright lights were captivating as was most music videos to Sirius. He didn’t think he’d ever get used to the concept, just like Remus could never quite get used to moving portraits.
“Sirius! Pleasure to meet you!” A voice called out, pulling Sirius from his thoughts. The man, at least mid thirties, smiled and extended a hand. “Matt, we talked on the phone. Let’s talk out back,”
Sirius firmly shook the other’s hand before following the man out back. The stockroom had cardboard boxes stacked against a wall, a set of small cubicles with names on them holding belongings, while a table sat in the center of the room. Sirius sat across from Matt and folded his hands as he waited for the man to begin.
The first questions were quite basic—ones that Remus referred to as ‘ice breakers’ to get to know Sirius—and by the time Matt began asking the more in depth questions, the two had already laughed quite a bit.
“Alright, says on your resume you attended a private school before working as a private investigator for an organization called ‘The Order’ up until last year,” Matt said as he read off of the resume Remus made. His eyes flicked up as he leaned back in his chair. “And then you’ve been unemployed ever since? If you don’t mind me asking, is there any reason why you haven’t had a job in the last year?”
“The organization disbanded after the passing of two well known members,” Sirius carefully explained, though his words were focused and he didn’t stumble, thanks to how many times he practiced this part with Remus. “Due to legal reasons, I can’t say much about the specifics of my previous job, but what I can say is that organization’s main work pertained to a particular dangerous group. Though we lost two of our top performing members, the other group was permanently taken down and nearly all its members were imprisoned.
“As far as what I’ve been doing,” Sirius swiftly continued, “I’ve been a stay at home parent for the past year.”
“Alright, do you have childcare set in place for when you’re working, or does your wife work too?” Matt asked as his eyes flicked down to the ring on Sirius’ ring finger.
“Oh, I’m not married,” Sirius quickly said as he momentarily fiddled with the ring on his finger. He wore a few rings across both hands, but the one on his ring finger was the only one that wasn’t his. It used to be James’s wedding band and when Sirius arrived at Godric’s Hollow that night, he took both James and Lily’s rings to hold onto for Harry. He wore James’s on his hand and Lily’s on a chain around his neck that was always hidden underneath his shirt. “But yes, I do have childcare.”
Matt nodded with a polite smile, though Sirius quickly picked up on the uncomfortable shift in the air. The interview continued but stopped not too long after the awkward question. If Matt was truly put off by it, he didn’t show it when he flashed a grin and shook Sirius’ hand on his way out, assuring he’d have a call by the end of the week about the decision.
Sirius thanked him, waved to Vicki, then left with a smile on his face as he tried to find the nearest apparation point.
A few days later, there was a ringing from Sirius’ phone just after Harry was put down for his nap.
“Love, how do I answer this again?” Sirius called out as he ran to the study to find Remus reading.
“Darling, it’s a green button—Just hand it over,” Remus chuckled as he held out his hand. Sirius dropped the phone into the outstretched hand as though it were something hot, causing Remus to rolled his eyes with a chuckle as he answered the phone. “Good morning...He’s right here...You too,”
Remus passed the phone back over as he returned to his book.
“Hi, this is Sirius,” Sirius said, mentally kicking himself for thinking of how stupid he sounded.
“Hi Sirius, this is Matt! How are you?”
“Good,” Matt laughed, “I’d like to offer you the job, you seem like you’d be a great addition to the team! When can you start?”
Sirius quickly moved the phone from his mouth and looked to Remus for help.
“Love, when can I start?” He whispered.
“As soon as possible—” Remus said without looking up from the book.
“I can start tomorrow,” Sirius said into the phone.
“Alright, I’ll put you on for noon until four just to get you situated with paperwork and then we’ll figure everything out from there.” Matt explained, “I look forward to see you tomorrow.”
The call ended and Sirius couldn’t wipe the smile from his face. He had a job, a muggle job, and it wasn’t some office job with people twice his age.
“I have a job,” He grinned down at Remus, whose head finally turned up. He set aside his book and pulled Sirius into his lap, a smirk on his face. “What’re you gonna do all day now that I have a job?”
“Celebrate that you’re finally out of the house—”
“Remus!” Sirius gasped, though his cheeks hurt from grinning too hard.
“Only kidding,” Remus said as he tightened his arms around Sirius. “I’ll have Harry, the days will go by quick.”
Sirius nodded and smiled as he brought their lips together. He’d definitely miss the ability to snog Remus whenever he liked, but Sirius knew he’d grow to enjoy his time at his new job.
