"Slow down a bit," Remus said to Sirius.

"Why? They'll just get ahead," Sirius looked puzzled.

"Pads. Let Lily and James have a moment free of your chatter," Remus said patiently.

"Chatter? Me?" Sirius looked astonished.

Remus sighed. "Not chatter, but, give them a moment alone."

Sirius glanced at the couple ahead of them on the walkway around the lake. The four had gone out to dinner together, Lily taking them to a Muggle restaurant. Italian today. They had fun and Sirius enjoyed the wine and food.

It had rained during dinner, the Fall air was cool and crisp.

Remus watched the couple ahead as he slowed his pace. Lily and James had moved closer together as they walked hand-in-hand. Heads were bent together, talking softly.

Remus saw Sirius catch on. "Oh!" He rolled his eyes. "Finally! James has been pining over Lily forever."

Sirius finally slowed, now ambling gently.

Remus took a breath. "He's not the only one who's been pining, you know."

Sirius stopped, facing Remus. "You? Pining? Who's the girl? She's not good enough for you!"

Heartened, Remus reached out and took Sirius' hand. "Not so bright, are you Pads?"

"Oh!" But he didn't let go.

Monthly Wolfstar Drabble Challenge

Prompt: Restless

Remus was with the werewolf packs for Dumbledore and the Order. Sirius was stuck in their flat that felt too small and too big all at once. Order security protocols. He was alone.

It wasn’t the first time Remus had gone to the packs, but Sirius was never going to get used to the feeling. The packs were incredibly dangerous, and Remus had no backup.

It was just like the feeling Sirius had gotten when he found out Regulus had taken the mark. Like he was constantly waiting for an owl to come with bad news. He waited while he tried to eat, while he tried to sleep, while he tried to breathe.

Every movement out of the corner of his eye could be that owl. The one with the news. The one that would drop off its letter and fly away with his heart.

He was always on edge, always braced for impact.

His body twitched with nerves constantly; he couldn’t force it to be still. There wasn’t enough to do with his hands. How did they usually stay busy all day?

He tried to eat, tried to sleep, tried to breathe. Just waiting.

Full moons with the packs were terrible. They had to be. Remus had refused to answer his questions or explain his injuries. That had been answer enough.

It felt like the couch he was sitting on could explode at any moment. Like he needed to sit very still so it wouldn’t, but his skin crawled intensely, his instincts warning him of the danger.

His muscles ached to move, so his feet took him in circles around the apartment, their pattern changing constantly. Going everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

His thoughts raced each other through his skull in painful circles. The bad ones always won.

The clock ticked loudly. Tick. Tick. Tick. Had it always been so loud?

He tried to eat. Tried to sleep. Tried to breathe. Still waiting.

His whole body felt like a balloon being overinflated — struggling harder and harder to hold in the air. The pressure was rising. It was only a matter of time before it burst.

His skin was itching but couldn’t be scratched.

And then it was over. The door of the flat opened and Remus was there, framed by the door.

Relief washed over Sirius’s body like a hot shower on a cold day.

“You’re home,” he breathed, scanning Remus for injuries while closing the distance between them so he could pull Remus in for a hug.

He’d been at their flat the entire time, but now he was actually home.

Everything stopped, the twitching, aching, and itching. The thoughts in his mind finally called their race a draw.

Remus nodded into his shoulder before pulling back to press their lips together, humming into their kiss softly.

“I missed you,” Remus whispered.

“I’ve missed you too.”

It was over, at least until the next time.

Wolfstar Winter Wonderland Challenge 2020

The Wolfstar Winter Wonderland Challenge of 2020 is here!

To inspire you, there are three photo prompts to choose from, but feel free to interpret them in any way you want. Make your story as fluffy, as dark or as smutty as you like.

Just a few simple rules & guidelines for this challenge:

- This is a Wolfstar challenge, so the main focus of your story has to be Remus & Sirius. But feel free to add any other characters you like.

- The minimum word count is 500. There is no maximum word count.

- This challenge runs from the 1st of November until the 31st of December. After that date, the collection will be closed.

- Works for this challenge have to be new. Even if you have an old story that fits one of this challenge’s prompts, please write something new for it. The goal of this challenge is to get creative and create new content, so let’s write as many new stories as possible.

- When you have finished writing your story, feel free to post it to the Challenge Collection on AO3. All stories posted to the AO3 collection will be shared on this Tumblr. If you do not have an AO3 account, then your story can not be added to the collection. If you still want to take part in the challenge, and you choose to post your story on another platform, then feel free to send me a link so your story can be shared on this Tumblr and added it to the masterlist.

- A masterlist of all the stories written for this challenge will be shared on this Tumblr in early January.

- Sign-ups are not required for this challenge.
