The Rampage of Bad Reichenhall - Info Post

Daniela’s Murder

On the 1st of November 1999, Martin Peyerl was left home alone, his parents leaving to visit his grandmother’s grave for All Saints’ Day. Martin’s older sister Daniela, who did not live at the home full time anymore, came home around noon. 

At this point reports vary, some say Daniela was shot twice, once in the head and once in the chest, with little to no struggle apparent. [7] Other reports say Daniela was shot 5 times in varying places, with an apparent struggle observed. Others just say random stuff idk man.

Deaths

After killing Daniela, Martin starts shooting out of two of his parents’ bedroom windows at passerbys. Two of Martin’s elderly neighbors, Ruth and Horst Zillenbiller, aged 59 and 60 respectively, were found dead with 10 gunshot wounds between them. They are believed to have died immediately. 

54 year old Karl-Heinz Lietz, a patient at the hospital across the street from Martin’s home, was shot once in the head, and succumbed to his wound the day after the attack. 

Martin’s father was the one originally believed to be the perpetrator, with this belief being quelled when he showed up at the police barricades.

Injuries

7 others were injured in the attack, 3 of them being German actor Gunter Lamprect, his partner Claudia Amm, and their driver Dieter Duhme. [4] I was unable to find names of any others injured.

Sometime during the attack Martin also shot and killed the family cat, it is debated when this happened, but most reports say this was after the shooting, right before he killed himself.

Martin’s Suicide

Martin’s rampage ended in him taking his father’s Henry double barrel shotgun to the bathroom, and shooting himself in his bathtub.

Recovery of victims

While it took the police around 6 hours to eventually breach the Peyerl’s home, they were able to get to some of the victims before this. Due to it being All Saints’ Day, Bavarian Minister President Edmund Stoiber was in Bad Reichenhall during the attack, as soon as he heard of what was occurring, he sent his armor-plated BMW limousine to the place where the attack was happening. One person who was severely injured was flown via helicopter to a hospital in Salzburg, Austria. [11]

Weapons Used

Martin broke into his father’s gun cabinet, and took 4 guns. Of those 2 were used in the attack itself (Those being a Ruger Mini-14 with an attached scope, and a Colt Python revolver), with a third (Henry double barrel shotgun) used for his suicide. The fourth gun he took, a Winchester M1866, was not ultimately used in the attack. [1]

It is reported that 50 shots were fired between the 3 guns. [2]

Motives

Nazi Imagery

Upon the police breaching the Peyerl’s home at around 6pm on November 1st, a swastika was found painted on Martin’s wall above his bed, along with other Wehrmacht symbols. [1]

In Martin’s sister’s room, which he had partially taken over, there was a picture of Hilter drawn by Martin (the drawing is potentially multiple years old, but reports vary) on the wall.

Martin was either suspended for or reported by classmates (again, reports vary, im so sorry theres so much contradictory info in these articles yall) to have drawn and pasted Nazi imagery into his school books and folders, however he never outwardly spoke about many political topics, with the only reported time of him doing so stating he thinks immigrants who commit crimes should not be allowed to stay in the country. [3]

“Criminologist Rudolf Egg posited that Peyerl's interest in neo-Nazi subculture was less political in nature and more related to his own insecurities, speculating that he may have felt "empowered" and "superior" by associating himself with a larger movement.” [2]

Violent Media

Among the Nazi imagery in Martin’s room, numerous CDs with right-wing and violent songs were found. Martin was also known by friends and classmates to often play violent video games. There is no specification on what he played or listened to as far as I could find.

Bullying

There’s little reporting on if Martin was actually bullied, many classmates, among others in Martin’s life say he was reserved, never had much to say, and a loner. World Socialist Web Site [3]  reports that Martin was called names like “Sprocki” (due to his ear shape, in reference to Sprock from StarTrek) and “Hunchback of Notre Dame” (due to a slight hump in his posture), but I have found no other articles corroborating this.

Relation to Columbine

Due to how close Martin’s attack was to Columbine, being a short 6 and a half months after the Colorado attack, many speculate Martin was inspired by Eric and Dylan. There is no concrete link between Martin and Columbine, however there have been old coworkers alleging Martin remarked that the attack was, “Great,” and “I want to do that!” There has only been one article to acknowledge where this quote came from, with most others seeming to use this first article as their basis. [5]

Interest in guns

“Peyerl was an avid gun enthusiast and frequently purchased gun magazines.” [7]

“He told classmates that he sometimes went to the forest looking for birds "to shoot"” [7]

“While some said he was polite and “always nice,” others noted that he showed early signs of fascination with violence and firearms.” [8]

“The 16-year-old’s rampage, as the psychiatrist Lothar Adler puts it, was “not a spontaneous or affectary act.”” [4]

Family/Life

Father

Martin’s father, Rudolf Peyerl, was a recently non-commissioned officer at a automotive maintenance squad in Bad Reichenhall [4] and a 12 year veteran of the German Army. [2]

Rudolf owned 17 guns (some reports say 19), 15 of which he owned legally on a gun possession card, he had 5 pistols and revolvers, and 12 shotguns. [1]

There is no evidence to suggest Rudolf’s guns were stored incorrectly or in an unsafe manner.

Rudolf reportedly had “problems with alcohol” (all of the articles refuse to call it alcoholism for some reason??? idk)

Due to Rudolf being frequently unemployed, the Peyerl family had some financial struggles.

Mother

Not much is known about her, her name is Theresa Peyerl

Martin’s Life

Born August 11, 1983

At the time of the attack Martin was reportedly in a locksmith apprenticeship or working as an industrial mechanic (idk man)

Lived in a “modest” apartment with his parents [8]

Murders

On December 17th 1992, Jacob Ind(15) killed his abusive mother and stepfather, with the help of Gabrial Adams. At around 1am, while Pamela(41) and Kermode Jordan(57)  slept, Gabrial Adams(18) snuck into the Jordans’ home with a .22 caliber handgun and a hunting knife. Jacob awoke to screaming and gunshots from his mother’s room, and waited in his room for Gabrial to finish the job. Gabrial had, however, loaded his gun with a caliber bullet too small to be lethal, and was unable to quickly and painlessly kill Pamela and Kermode like Jacob had hoped. Jacob got up and went to his parents room after a bit, he grabbed a can of bear mace and sprayed both his stepfather and mother with it. He then got Kermode’s .357 Magnum and loaded a single bullet into it, with the bullet he shot and killed Kermode, who was slumped over on the floor from 4 bullet wounds and multiple stab wounds. Pamela kneeled over her dead husband after Jacob shot him, confused and terrified, bleeding from 2 gunshot wounds, and stab wounds in her stomach and head. Jacob loaded another bullet into the chamber and shot at his mother, he missed the first shot, and as he was loading a third and final bullet to kill his mother she asked him why he would do this, Jacob responded, “Because you were cruel to me,” and then killed her. 8 minutes passed between the first and last gunshots.

Immediately after the attack Jacob and Gabrial washed their hands of blood, Gabrial took the guns and knife, and went home. Jacob tried to sleep, but couldn’t, so he took a shower, then grabbed his blanket and alarm clock and went downstairs. He read his Bible and prayed, and thought, “the only way to make it right was to kill myself." the family cat Hops jumped onto the couch and curled up on his chest, Hops’ purring soothed Jacob to sleep. [1]

Arrest/Conviction

Jacob went to school on the 17th with the plan to tell one of his friends what had occurred, and then end his life, however the friend he told alerted the principal, who called the police. Jacob was tried as an adult in 1994, and prosecutors wanted to pursue the death penalty for him, but he was too young for them to do so. Jacob was convicted on 2 counts of first degree murder, and was sentenced to 2 life terms without parole. In 1996 Jacob appealed his sentence, but it was rejected. After finally getting approval for a resentencing hearing, Jacob went for an entire retrial, which was granted in 2018. As a result of the retrial Jacob was released on parole in September of 2021. [2] To this day Jacob reportedly does not feel guilty, "My mom and Kermode forfeited all their human worth," he says. "I can't feel bad about it. It sounds terrible to say. But a lot of people who've been molested are going to understand it." from the Denver Post. [1]

Abuse

Jacob’s brother Charles testified in the first trial that the murders were, “the culmination of years of abuse by their parents. Jacob told FRONTLINE that he began thinking about killing his parents when he was "12 or 13" years old. "What basically put me towards the path is I saw no way out," he said.” According to FRONTLINE. In a book written about Jacob’s life and the murders, Jacob describes having intercourse with his mother. During the trial Charles testified to what Kermode would do to him and Jacob, saying Kermode, ”would basically rape us. Tie us to the toilet. Have us get undressed. Then tie us so we couldn't move our hands or feet." Their mother would hit them with a belt, paddle, wooden spoon and cutting board, wash their mouths out with soap, and verbally cut them down, All for giving dirty looks, saying "no," watching the wrong TV shows or playing in the backyard without permission.” According to Jacob the sexual abuse stopped when they moved to Colorado in 1987, but the physical and verbal abuse did not. [1]

Jacob’s parents were also known to be heavy drinkers, with Kermode specifically being known inside and outside the home to be a, “mean drunk.” According to the Denver post, “Kermode and Pam often teamed up to yell at and smack Jacob for arguing with them. "I was so scared of being hit all the time that if my mom even just raised her hand, I'd duck. She'd say, "Oh, it's all right, I'm not going to hit you. Then she'd laugh about it." Said Jacob.” [1]

Their grandmother also knew of the abuse according to the Denver Post,”Grace Trenbeath, Jacob's 72-year-old grandmother, wishes she, too, had fought harder.  "I keep blaming myself," she says from her home in Arizona. "I knew the unhappiness in their eyes. I wish I had done more to get the boys out of there."” [1]
