Women of Color Banquet

Last night was the Women of Color Banquet sponsored by Women's and Social Justice Programs in the Office of Student Life. Two words I can use to describe the event: inspirational and challenging. I had an amazing time listening to the stories of the women on the panel. I had an even better experience talking to a few of them during the dessert reception! During the dinner I asked the women if they had any advice for the graduating seniors that are scared to take the next step in their lives. I am one of those seniors. Graduation excites me and completely terrifies me at the same time. I confessed that one of the reasons why I'm delaying grad school is because I'm completely scared of rejections and having no where to go. Later I found out that I'm not the only person who's ever felt this way and that at some point most if not all the women on the panel were afraid to take the next step. However, fear did not stop them from going on a limb, applying for programs and scholarships, and following their dreams. When one door wasn't opened for them they tried something new and kept going. I needed to hear their stories! I needed to see the passion they have for their careers and feel their eagerness to share their experiences with us. Dinner was such a relief and a motivator for me. The conversations I had challenged me to not be afraid of a few NO's and if I never apply then I'll never give these schools and organizations an opportunity to tell me YES! This event was so tremendous and momentous in my life and I will hold on to the advice these amazing women have given me as I step out on faith and follow my dreams. THANK YOU!
