By Any Other Name by Jodi Picoult ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
From the New York Times bestselling co-author of Mad Honey comes By Any Other Name, an “inspiring” (Elle) novel intertwining the lives of two women, centuries apart, both determined to make their voices heard in a world that silences them. Modern-day playwright Melina Green has crafted a work inspired by her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano but faces the uphill battle of being a woman in theater. When her best friend submits the play under a male pseudonym, Melina is thrust into an ethical and creative dilemma.
In 1581, young Emilia Bassano, a ward of English aristocrats, is gifted with a sharp mind and talent for storytelling but is denied the right to claim her work. Forced into an affair with the Lord Chamberlain, Emilia begins to secretly bring her plays to the stage under the name of an ambitious actor—William Shakespeare. Rooted in historical sources, this sweeping tale of ambition, courage, and sacrifice asks: what should a writer risk to see her story endure?

I've always loved Jodi Picoult books. It's now a running joke in the house - my husband just calls her "Jodi P." as if we're on first name, last initial basis. Mrs. Picoult has yet to write a book I did not absolutely love. By Any Other Name is no different. It feels timely at this moment in history, when people are literally attempting to rewrite history. More people need to be educated on our history as humans. In the 1500s, Emilia could have been put to death for her writing. If the Queen decided the writing was heretical or simply against her own viewpoint, she could easily demand the writer's arrest and subsequent death.
I almost cried too many times to keep track. Emilia's life is one we could all learn from for it was the life of so many women. Sold at a young age and never given the chance to follow her own ambitions, she consistently struggles with being an educated woman in a world that not only discouraged education in women, but villainzied educated women. We are seeing this same thing happen across the world - facts are being scoffed at, knowledge is being seen as "weak" (or "woke"). Our very existence as marginalized people (I as a woman) is a protest.
