travels hadn’t been ariadna’s favoured source of what her father liked to call adventure, the winding roads and unpaved lands proved irksome and frankly s i c k e n i n g for the young princess. the castle was warm, the gardens provided as much perfumed fresh air as one desired and had her fantasy taken her beyond the castle grounds; there was always a horse tacked up and waiting to escort her to new territories.
that being said, the invitation, no, more of a push, from her father to spend a month in france in the company of a fellow spaniard was an opportunity even ariadna refused to miss. as tongues wagged and news spread swifter than wildfire, ariadna was no stranger to the fact that spain was full of strong women. women who said no, who questioned the status quo and who proved just as fierce and capable as their male counterparts.. but more than a spaniard, she was a queen, and that made her celestial in ariadna’s eyes.
the journey had been long and ariadna hadn’t gathered so much as a wink of sleep the entire journey and yet, upon word of their arrival, any quarrels she had disintegrated like morning dew. her neighbour, france, was unmistakably a formidable force and a trusted ally of spain. but more than that, ariadna’s excursion was filled with one thing. a notion unique and foreign to the young princess: h o p e.
“--- isabel...” the faux sense of delight at formal greetings of other royals was soon swept away by something radiant on ariadna’s expression. “how i have missed you.” and while their last union had been under more solemn and morbid circumstances, ariadna was glad to see a face she could trust. as a servant was ushered to the princess’ side, a small box wrapped in parchment manifested in front of her. “i had the chefs make you some mantecados. i thought, since you could no longer be in spain that i would bring a little something of spain to you.”
