“No you haven’t, but if it was you, you would want some hope that your family still cared for you.” She sighed and shook her head. “No matter what she has done, she is still our family, your sister and my daughter. I will not abandon her, especially at such a difficult time.”

“It would be well within our right to.” Why did Louise have to ruin everything? From stealing his toys as children, now pulling his mother away from court at a time where his reign was so new; he didn’t care if it were only for a day or two. “Fine, go fawn over Louise and forgive all her sins,” he snapped. “You can stay with her for all I care.”

It irritated her greatly that even on this, the day of their union, Guillaume still could not be bothered to even feign excitement for the venture. She had hoped her attempt at pleasuring him the other day would help him to open up to her, but it seemed he was just as happy to take pleasure from her as if from a whore and then continue to ignore her otherwise. She sighed and settled into the chair next to her husband’s, looking out on the crowd. “I am no stranger to such lavish events myself,” she agreed, “No matter how beautiful, they do all become dull eventually.” She had sneaked away from many such events - whether it was to find mischief searching hidden corridors or to lure her current suitor away with promises of pleasure never quite to be fulfilled. She wished she could intrigue him into running away with her now, but that would require him to find any intrigue in her at all. “I’m sure you’ve conceived your own ways of making them more interesting…” She goaded in hopes of getting him to reveal at least something entertaining.

He had always known he would wed- he had been born the heir to a kingdom, and thus had to produce heirs of his own. He had just figured it would be to someone more... agreeable than Aularia; someone reared for the position of consort. Guillaume hummed at her words. “Usually the way to make such things interesting is to leave them.” But this event was in their honour, and he could hardly leave until the appropriate time. So instead he would drink his wine and have whispered conversations with those in his inner circle- except Aularia had chosen to come up to him. “Do you not have people you can speak with, or must you bother me?”

It was truly a vision - the grand ballroom decked out with the flowers Isabel had helped her choose and decorations brought from her stores back home. It was a lavish affair - so much so that it felt like a dream. Could she really be married at last? With a few simply words by the priest, she was Queen of France. The thought filled her with such glee that she could not have stopped smiling if she tried as she milled through the plethora of visitors come to grant their well-wishes upon the new royal couple. She looked to the table at the head of the room and saw her Husband there, looking over the bustle of guests. Soon it would be time for their first dance, and shortly after, a dance of an entirely different kind… For now, though, Aularia continued to put that ordeal out of her mind. She made her way through the crowd to join him behind the table on the dais once again, picking up her glass of wine as she, too, looked out over the crowd. “I hope you are enjoying these festivities as much as I am, dear husband,” she cooed sweetly, sipping from her glass.

He sat in his chair, over looking the festivities below him as he sipped upon his wine. The occasional courtier would come to greet their king and provide congratulations, but he had been content to overlook it all from above with one of his close companions at his side. He waved the man away however when the Italian lady- his wife now, he supposed- came up to the dais. He lifted his glass to her in acknowledgement before drinking from it. “We have parties such as this quite often at Versailles, you shall come to see.” However, despite the luxury of it all, it was quite the bore. With the quiet music in the background and the milling of guests from across the country- and world- it was hardly as exciting as the parties thrown behind closed doors by the young courtiers; filled with debauchery and the hedonism known only to the highest ranks. This was a more formal and somber affair.

She glared down at her son. “If you had done something wrong that had banished you from court and you fell ill, wouldn’t you feel that you have been abandoned by your family when you need them most? Wouldn’t you be happier if I came to visit where you were hiding to take care of you?” It wasn’t surprising that he was fighting against this. Still, she wished he would understand. “I am not leaving her alone for this. She might turn me away but at least I can try to show her I am there to help.”

   Guillaume was king now. He could order her to remain at court- it was well within his rights. Refuse to allow her to go. It’s what Louise deserved. “Except I was never banished from court. I have not hurt out family in the way she has.” He gave a shake of his head. “Besides, she’s not ill. She’s pregnant.”

“You have both caused trouble for each other,” she pointed out. It was hard to explain to any man what this pregnancy would be like, but someone who was always at odds with the pregnant woman.  “I cannot take that chance, Guillaume. I lost five children. There is a chance she might lose this child. Even beyond that, the only ones around her now are women who have never been pregnant. she needs someone who knows what she is going through. And she probably feels that we have abandoned her, and she needs to know she is loved.”

The young king gave a roll of his eyes at his mother’s words. “She was the one who got herself in such a position. She doesn’t need your pity or protection- we are doing more than enough by giving her a safe place to stay.” They could have disowned her, sent her away without a word. Instead they had found her a place at the convent. It was more than she deserved for the betrayal against their family. She had a place, and had thrown it away. “Must you go?”

She sighed. “I never thought you would take the time to wonder such things. You and Louise never asked about having other siblings. I never wanted to talk about it before because it is hard for me to talk about it. But your sister needs to know that if I had these complications that she might as well. If something happens, she will need me there, and even if she completes the pregnancy, I do not want her to feel alone or abandoned. I will be discreet, and I am not sure if she will even allow me to be in her life anymore. I don’t blame her if she doesn’t.”

“Louise is worth the trouble of ten siblings, I don’t think I would much fancy any others.” He sighed, shaking his head. He would have been happier an only child. No one else to compete with for attention, no one who saw themselves as his equal. “She has her ladies, she shall hardly be alone.” He gave her hands a squeeze. “Nothing shall happen, she shall be fine. You know how Louise is.”

“Of course I know that, but I hope her charitable nature is hope that there are others in this world outside of herself.” She shook her head at his concern. “I understand, but I will not let my daughter be alone in her condition.” They were in her chambers, so she was able to be discreet. “Guillaume…there is a possibility that this pregnancy will provide risks for her. I never told you or your sister this, but you and your sister were not the only pregnancy I have been through. You were simply the only children who survived.”

“Do you think me unaware of such things?” He reached to grasp at her hands, holding them tight. It had never been confirmed, but he had heard whispers- and had enough common sense to think other wise. Providing heirs was the greatest duty of a queen- it was doubtful his mother had only had one pregnancy. “I believe I have read enough medical journals to know of the risks. However, we must be careful know one else knows- enough people already do. If anyone else were to find out, it could be the greatest disaster France has faced in decades.”

“You never need to thank me for helping you, my darling. I will always help you in any way I can.” Her hand grazed his cheek with a soft smile. “I have looked into her claims of generosity towards the people, and they are true. I fear for her motives behind such charitable acts.” She quickly changed the subject. “You should know that I am travelling to see your sister in a few days. I am not sure if she will want to see me, but I need to be there for her.”

“Being charitable is not the sole trait a queen requires- no matter the reasoning behind it.” Though he doubted that Aularia did anything for the right motivations. She seemed one to want praise and attention. “If we are to have people believe she is ill, we must distance ourselves from her. We cannot have people wondering if you shall fall ill as well. She was sent away for a reason, and we must remember it.”

She gave a shy smile at her son’s compliment. Her hand stroked one of his blonde curls. He admired her so much, and it made her heart happy that he saw that in her. His observation of his fiancee was true, and she had to nod in agreement. “I have seen it too, but I am still here to help. I will not let her destroy you or France. She has some promise, and I will teach her the ways to be a good queen for her.”

“Thank you, maman.” He was grateful for his mother’s help in the matter- he didn’t know what he would do without her. If anyone was the talk sense into Aularia, it would be the queen mother. “I believe she shall need all the help she can get.” She was rough around the edges in a way the French court could never get behind.

“She did, but I’m not going to put her on a pedestal and praise every little thing she does,” he replied, “she knows this already and has no say in the matter. She is difficult, and stubborn, and tries to get her way by trying to one up the other person but she’s truly a a kind person,” he explained. “I only ask that you open your mind and give her a chance to show that she isn’t such a bad person”

The king let out a small scoff. “A truly good person would have no need to send someone to plead for second chances.” He gave a shake of his head. Guillaume had never been one with hopes of a marriage of love and joy- to him marriage was merely another duty he must fulfill for his country. And his marriage to Aularia was truly proving to be a troublesome duty. “We are wed, she is queen, can she not be happy with that at least? It is a large palace, she has her own household, what more does she wish of me?”

“Your Majesty,” he said with a small bow, knowing this was a risky thing to do, he could either be on good terms with the king or cause a war and he really didn’t need the stress of it today. “I came today to talk to you about her majesty and my dear friend, Aularia, I know she’s probably come on a bit strong lately but I want to defend her at least if you’d let me”

The sight of the crown prince certainly intrigued Guillaume, until the words left his mouth. He let out a small roll of his eyes, before giving a quick nod of his head. “Very well,” he said. He gestured for Leopoldo to take a seat. “Did she send you to beg her cause?”

❝ I think you’re looking in a mirror,❞ It was a pitiful retort, but well-deserved. Guillaume was an absolute child and hard to stomach at the best of times. This was not the best of times. Louise pushed herself up, arms weak and wobbling but determination and annoyance providing her with strength despite that.  ❝ Kingship hasn’t given you any charm or made you more respectable, Guillaume. I pity you. ❞

“I’m still more charming than you,” he snorted. God, she was pitiful. He had never seen her look so sickly. “Perhaps I ought to bring your ladies back to court, leave you at the mercy of the nuns.” While there were still many noble women at court, there was a certain member of his sister’s household he wished had remained. “It would only be what you deserve.”

It was clear he was determined to keep up this charade of disinterest towards her, and she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of acknowledging it again. After all, the hint of intrigue in his eyes, the hitch of his breath - it gave him away. Somewhere, like smoke, tendrils of her were slipping through his cracks and the knowledge of it sent Aularia’s heart racing with the stakes of the game.

His head tilted back as he groaned at her touch. He hadn’t meant to give her the satisfaction of a reaction, but it was instinct. If this was a way to shut her up, he wouldn’t complain- and she did make a rather pretty picture on her knees. He supposed if she were to stay in such a position and keep quiet, the marriage wouldn’t be as awful as he thought- although, given her proclivity to talk and how her words seemed to always annoy him, he doubted it would be so easy. At least Versailles was a grand palace, he would rarely see her unless he wished to. A perk of his station- the king had separate chambers from his queen.

Her breath quickened as she felt his touch on her skin; the prolonged waiting was almost unbearable. Eliza reached to his lips again, kissing him passionately and eagerly, she wanted to make sure if the kisses were enough to sooth the fire inside her… or not. As if she truly was about to turn into some unholy child of the night, eager for blood, she nibbled on his bottom lip.  

“ Don’t hold back. I’m not a nun yet, am I ? “ she breathed out, reaching out to brush her fingers across his cheast and lower, her legs now slightly parted. She wondered, if he could feel that they are shaking slightly, or did he hear the echo of how loud her heart is beating.

“Not ever, I hope.” He moved to her throat, his teeth nipping at her skin before soothing it with kisses as his hand ran across her thigh. Guillaume shifted uncomfortably in his seat, trying to ease the tightening in his breeches. 

Hand slipped between her parted thighs, letting out a groan at what he found there. Fingers ran through the wetness at the top of her thighs as he bit down on a sensitive spot on her neck. “Ma chère, I believe you becoming a nun shall be the end of the church.”

When he finally gazed up at her, she gave him a placating smile mixed with the look of lust in her eyes. “That is only because you view me as an inconvenience,” She pointed out plainly, voice dripping saccharine like molasses. Aularia reached up to touch the King’s cheek with her fingertips, trailing them down the line of stubble and further off his jaw and over the veins in his throat. Meanwhile she rounded him from the side, her other hand trailing still lower as she dropped gracefully to kneel next to him. “Perhaps it is time I show you the conveniences which I could provide…” She implied provocatively, her fingers coming to rest on the tie of his trousers as she looked up at him with her beguiling gaze from beneath flaxen lashes.

“I view you as one because you act as such.” He met her eyes- blue meeting blue, his an icy glare compared to hers. Her entire demeanor was tooth aching- except for the hand that found a place on his breeches. Guillaume let out a breathe of air at the touch of her hand- he was curious how far she was willing to go, or if she was simply going to tease without following through. “What sort of conveniences do you speak of?”
