It is no great secret that Pat once owned the Wonderbar but was forced to sell it due to Eminent Domain. To this day he still calls it one of the biggest mistakes of his life. While the iconic face of Tillie still graces the waterfront, it is now owned by iStar and is sitting in what will soon be the shadow of 1101 Ocean, a looming 15-story condominium and hotel building. The Wonderbar seems destined to meet the same fate as its neighboring buildings that once represented the heart of Asbury Park. “I think the Wonderbar and the Pony will be the last ones to go. But if that building [1101] is a success, they’re either going to start building like crazy or dumping to other developers. Either way they’re going to raze everything.” I ask if he thinks they’re razing the soul of Asbury park, and he gets very quiet. “It’s not going to be the same. It’s not the same today. We’re sitting in a building that exemplifies that. My opinion is that the downtown will be the last soldier standing.”
