Birch Bark Cup

This is a functional art piece that I made. It took me a long time, but in the end I think it worked out. I started off with two pieces of birch bark, then I sewed them together. Then I put the bottom on, and sewed that. After everything was sealed off I water proofed the container. I used a pine pitch resin. I melted pine sap, then added charcoal to the mix to make it gummy. I applied that to the bottom of the container, now it's waterproof! My favorite part of this piece is the art, and grace of this container. My least favorite part is the string that I used to sew. One side is a leather string, the other is a wax string. It looks really weird with both of them on the container. Overall it is very cool and I love how it turned out.

Materials - bark, pine sap, charcoal, needle, thread, water, container.
