Or how the size and shape of the wood we get quite often dictates the final shape and size… The end of each process has its own exciting part. After each step it suddenly becomes more whole which is the best part.” Handcarved by Takahashi McGill, the renowned collaborative duo who create beautifully delicate hand turned pieces made from wood, such as ash and beech. This exciting new body of work is finished with an assortment of urushi, which helps to make the wood waterproof and durable. The rich organic shades compliment the refined texture and reveals the natural characteristics of the wood. The distinct mark making from their mastered technique glides through the form, resulting in an exquisitely tangible form. The textured surface complements McGil’s selection of lime wood. It is finished with sabi urushi, a mixture of clay, water and urushi. New exhibition at Maud and Mable

KOGARASHI : FIRST COLD WIND 

木枯らし  Kogarashi  :  cold, wintry wind, the first signs of winter.

 

An exhibition celebrating the coming of Autumn with a selection of works in ceramic, wood and art, by artists that share a strong connection to nature through both inspiration and materials.

Individually and collectively, physically and symbolically, these artworks are representations of the natural world. The eclectic range of pieces illustrates both the range of techniques and traditions used by the artists, and the sheer volume of variety present in the natural world.

Magnolia bowl.

I started carving this bowl to finish with sabi urushi, because of cracks. However this lovely bowl revealing it's beautiful colours as I go on. We are going leave it without finish for now anyway. We are bit too charmed with this beautiful patterns.

木蓮の器。

所々割れてしまったので錆び漆で割れ目を埋めようと思い彫り始めましたが、彫っていくうちにとってもきれいな模様が鮮明に出てきました。この美しい模様に惚れてしまったので、とりあえず漆は今のところおあずけでこのままにすることにします。
