I think I found a reasonably priced and local source of loom-woven, 100% virgin wool point blankets to make an 18th century capote coat… incredibly noted and it will be a project I’ll be excited fo make! Gotta finish my wedding outfits first.
From the early days of the North American fur trade, both indigenous peoples and European Canadian settlers fashioned wool blankets into "capotes" as a means of coping with harsh winters. The garments served as winter outerwear for First Nations, the habitants and voyageurs of New France, the Métis of the Red River Colony, and the British settlers, traders, and trappers of British North America.
The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) sold capotes, called blanket coats, made out of the company's "point" blankets. These were sold at HBC trading posts starting the early 18th-century, and were popular among traders for their "wrap" style, which was easy to move and hunt in.
It’s a coat I can wear on my woodland hikes, for outdoor rituals, and it looks cool!! And a part of my heritage :)

A Complete Guide to Buying Woollen Wear in Chennai
When you think of Chennai, you probably imagine sweltering summers, high humidity, and monsoon rains. But come November to January, the weather in Chennai can surprise you with a sudden drop in temperature, especially in the early mornings, evenings, and during late-night travel. While winters here are mild compared to North India, many people still feel the chill – particularly children, elderly citizens, and office-goers commuting on two-wheelers. This is where woollen wear becomes a wardrobe essential.
If you’re wondering how to shop smartly for woollen clothes in Chennai, this guide will help you make the right choices.
Why Woollen Wear Matters in Chennai’s Winters
Comfortable Warmth: Even though the temperatures hover around 18°C–22°C, the sea breeze and damp air make it feel colder than it looks. Woollen wear offers the right amount of insulation to keep you warm.
Health Protection: Sudden chills can trigger cough, cold, and body aches. A simple woollen layer can prevent unnecessary seasonal illnesses.
Travel Ready: Many Chennai residents plan trips to hill stations like Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, or even further north. Woollen wear purchased in Chennai will serve you both locally and while travelling.
Types of Woollen Wear Available in Chennai
When shopping for woollens, it helps to know the options you have:
Sweaters
Ideal for mild winter mornings and evenings.
Available in lightweight cotton-wool blends for Chennai’s climate.
Styles: Pullover, cardigan, or zip-up.
Woollen Jackets
Perfect for two-wheeler riders and those who feel colder outdoors.
Come in fashionable styles suitable for work or casual outings.
Shawls and Stoles
Popular among women for both warmth and style.
Easy to carry and layer without feeling bulky.
Thermal Wear
Though not visibly woollen, many thermals use wool-blend fabrics.
Worn as an inner layer for all-day comfort.
Woollen Caps, Gloves & Socks
Often overlooked but very useful for children and senior citizens.
Lightweight woollen accessories make a big difference during windy nights or travel.
How to Choose Woollen Wear in Chennai
Consider the Climate
Opt for lightweight woollens or blended fabrics instead of thick, heavy wool meant for freezing conditions.
Check the Fabric
Pure wool is warm but may feel heavy. Wool-blend fabrics (wool + acrylic or cotton) are more breathable and suitable for Chennai.
Look for Comfort
Ensure the fabric is soft on skin and not itchy. Merino wool and blends are more comfortable than coarse varieties.
Focus on Versatility
Choose colors and styles you can pair with multiple outfits – neutral shades like black, grey, navy, or beige work best.
Think Long-Term
If you plan frequent trips to colder destinations, invest in slightly heavier woollens or multi-purpose jackets that serve both Chennai and hill station climates.
Where to Buy Woollen Wear in Chennai
Specialized Winter Wear Stores
These shops stock a wide range of thermal wear, sweaters, and jackets designed for Indian winters.
Example: Stores in T. Nagar, Pondy Bazaar, and Parry’s Corner are known for seasonal collections.
Multi-Brand Showrooms & Malls
Lifestyle, Reliance Trends, and similar outlets bring branded winter wear every season.
Local Shops & Street Markets
Great for budget-friendly woollen caps, gloves, and simple sweaters.
Online Shopping
Platforms like Amazon, Myntra, and Flipkart provide wider options, but sizing and fabric feel are harder to judge without trying.
👉 For the best experience, many locals prefer specialized winter wear stores in Chennai, as they offer products suited to local needs and travel purposes.
Tips for Maintaining Woollen Wear
Hand Wash or Gentle Cycle: Wool shrinks under harsh machine washes.
Dry Flat in Shade: Avoid hanging heavy woollens to dry as they may lose shape.
Use Airtight Storage: Store in sealed bags with naphthalene balls or cedar blocks to prevent moth damage.
Avoid Frequent Washing: Wool doesn’t absorb odors easily; airing them out often is enough.
Final Thoughts
Buying woollen wear in Chennai may seem unnecessary to some, but those who have experienced the city’s cool, breezy winters know the value of staying warm. Whether you need a simple sweater for morning walks, a jacket for two-wheeler commutes, or thermals for a hill-station trip, investing in the right woollens ensures comfort, style, and health protection.
With a variety of options available across Chennai, a little knowledge goes a long way in picking woollens that are lightweight, breathable, and perfect for our climate. Make your choices wisely, and you’ll stay cozy through Chennai’s unexpected winters.
