WOOLF PACK IS OPENING UP SUBMISSIONS FOR OUR SEVENTH ISSUE! ARE YOU A FEMALE OR NON-BINARY WRITER/ARTIST IN AUSTRALIA? SEND US YOUR COOL SHIT TO [email protected] BY 30TH JUNE 2016 TRUE FAQS: What kind of stuff should we send you? Essays! Rants! Fiction! Illustrations! Photos! Comics! Recipes! Mixed Media! Collage! Poetry! How-tos! Anything realistically printable in a zine! If you haven’t seen the zine before, you can get at all the old issues in the sidebar, so check out the sort of thing we do. We’re on our seventh issue, so we love seeing non-fiction with really interesting, specific and unique viewpoints- reading up’ll help you feel out our style, and get a sense of what we’ve already done. Can I send you something I’ve already put on my tumblr/blog/own zine/an assignment etc? You sure can! Basically anything that’s your original work and you haven’t had published through an exclusive contract. We ain’t got lawyers. How big/long/what size/what format should submissions be in? Text stuff: Don’t send me anything over 3000 words, and we’d still probably shorten it up a little. We want to fit as much as we can in each zine, and I’ve got to read it all. Other than that, send it however you like, in the fonts of your wildest dreams (no papyrus). .docx files are my fave, don’t send a pdf or anything weird. All drafting’ll be in the same format- please don’t send me drafts in the body of emails! Image goodness: Preferred: 300dpi - a5 1748 x 2480 px, a4 2480 x 3508 px, portrait in A5 or landscape in A4. We print in full colour, so cmyk/rgb is fine– but tbqh the print-at-home feature of the zine means that colour quality is mid fidelity, so best not to get too attached to that shade of palest mauve in your piece. Preferred file type: .png or .tiff and .jpg is acceptable if you’re saving from an original lossless file. If you don’t know what any of this means that’s fine too, we’ll try our best to help you figure it out, there’s lots of space to negotiate so don’t let the above deter you! Is anything off-limits? Being completely independent means we can publish pretty much whatevs we want, so these are our own standards. Things that are fine: Language! Nudity! Adult themes! General insurrection! Discussions of Real Shit! Things to keep in mind: If your piece involves the use of slurs, we may asterisk them up. If you’re commenting on the slurs meaningfully and in good faith, that’s probably going to be fine. If you’re using slurs to be totes edgy and rustle jimmies, we’ll probably be bored with it. We may ask you to put content warnings in text pieces (we’ve generally used them in-text if something super gnarly is coming up), or insert our own. Content warnings are important because they’re the very definition of classification over censorship, and we want the freedom to discuss anything that affects us, like assault or mental illness, while giving people the heads up they need when going into a topic that’s tough for them. We will not publish pieces about how content warnings are wimpy and indulgent and are ruining academia, because we hate that. We publish vegan recipes, because most of us are vegan or vegetarian. If you have a recipe idea but it’s not vegan, one of our Vegan Wizards might be able to work some magic with you. I have an idea, but don’t know how to do it! Message our facebook page, or email us at [email protected] for helpful hints and tips! What happens if you’d like to publish my thing? Hooray! One of us will be in touch (Talia for visual pieces, Rebecca for anything with words) to edit your piece and make sure we’re both happy with it. We edit/give feedback on/workshop all of our stuff until both we and the artist are happy with it, so get ready to furiously draft. Because we’re students, and we publish between semesters now, the cycle for this issue is tight. So please be ready to draft speedily! Why didn’t I make it into this issue? Like we said, this is a fly-by-night self-printing operation, so we can only publish so much. Everyone will hear back individually from me either way, so you may get some feedback, notification that I’m holding the piece over for the next issue (with your permission), or a friendly ‘submit next issue!’ Do you pay for content? We now actually do. We’ve decided to pay AUD$20 bucks for a piece this issue, and hopefully subsequent ones. We’re self-funded, but we do charge for the zines- and our artists work hard. A ‘piece’ for the purposes of payment will be anything that would come under a single heading in our contents page, and will probably be negotiated individually; it’ll be paid when content is finalized. We’ll also get a copy to you wherever you are (contributors are not allowed to pay for issues, no). Though sometimes that takes a little while. I’m not female or non-binary, why can’t I be in the zine?! Real answer for polite people: That’s who we publish! An important part of treating women and gender minorities better is reading our stories and consuming our art, and ensuring there’s delineated space for it. Zines are hyper-accessible too, so I can say “go make your own zine!” and have it be legitimate, non-sarcastic advice.
