WOOL ALLERGIES. Apparently, there is no such thing as wool allergies. According to the book “The Field Guide To Fleece”, “... wool is chemically the same as hair. The proteins and amino acids that form our hair, skin, and fingernails are the same as those in wool.” “... people may be allergic to the lanolin naturally found in wool (though wool can be cleaned to where lanolin practically is nonexistent); some are allergic to plant material on raw fleece; and some are allergic to chemicals used in growing or processing wool.” The author of the book believes that stiff fiber ends (fibers with diameter greater than 30 microns) stick out and irritate the skin. Fine fibers (less than 30 microns) such as Merinos won’t scratch. I actually noticed from my own experience that not every wool garment is scratchy.
