In Microsoft Word, how can I display or hide formatting marks such as spaces and tabs?
To display or hide formatting marks (e.g., spaces, tabs, and paragraph breaks) in a Microsoft Word document:
Word for Windows
In Word 2010, on the File tab, click Options. In Word 2007, from the Office Button menu, select Word Options near the bottom right corner of the menu.
Select Display from the listing at the left.
In the section titled "Always show these formatting marks on the screen", check or uncheck the appropriate boxes to view the marks of your choice. To show or hide them all, select Show all formatting marks.
To save your changes, click OK.
Word for Mac OS X
From the Word menu, select Preferences... .
Select View.
In the section titled "Nonprinting characters", check or uncheck the appropriate boxes to view the marks of your choice. Check All to see all formatting marks.
To save your changes, click OK.
You can also toggle between displaying and hiding formatting marks. To do so:
In Word for Windows, on the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the paragraph icon.
In Word for Mac OS X, click the paragraph icon in the Word Standard toolbar. If you don't see the icon, from the View menu, chooseToolbars, and then check Standard.

I do, but I don’t understand your question. You want to add or delete the tabs?
In 2008, you can have an unlimited number of tabs on the right side of the page in Notebook view that lets your organize notes into chapters, etc. Then you can click through them to skip ahead to another section of your notes.
But it will only show a few of them at a time, depending on how long their labels are and how zoomed in you are. The most I can get at a time is about 5. There's an arrow to scroll down through the tabs, but if the labels are different lengths, this causes the scrolling arrow to jump around to different positions, and it's a huge pain in the ass when I'm trying to move back and forth from a section near the beginning to one near the end. It would be much easier if it could just display all the tabs at the same time, so I could scroll down with the wheel on my mouse or something instead of clicking all over the place. There doesn't seem to be anyway to change that, though. If you have like 15 tabs in a document in Word 2011, can you display them all at once?
That was a long explanation - does it make more sense? It sounds minor, but when I'm working with these notes all the time, and already prone to rage, because, you know, it's my dissertation, it gets really irritating.

I want to know if it's possible to specify the number of tabs visible in the Notebook view.
I can't do this in 2008, and it's really awkward to scroll through them. I keep a lot of my dissertation notes that way, and it annoys me so much that I might be willing to pay for an upgrade if that were fixed.
But probably not annoyed enough to come up with another system for storing my notes.
