Bonus 62: Approaching word games like a linguist - Interview with Nicole Holliday and Ben Zimmer of Spectacular Vernacular

Word games are a fun way of thinking about the structure of language, from which letters tend to appear in combination with each other to how many different clues you can give towards the same word. Many people have been refining a new set of word game solving strategies recently thanks to a new game called Wordle.

In this bonus episode, we're joined by Nicole Holliday and Ben Zimmer to get enthusiastic about word games and puzzles! Dr. Nicole Holliday was our very first interviewee and is an assistant prof at Penn currently working on what it means for voice assistants like Alexa to "sound Black". Ben Zimmer writes a language column for the Wall St Journal, and helped Gretchen get one of her very first writing gigs. Together, they hosted the word-game-themed podcast Spectacular Vernacular for Slate from 2021 to 2022. We talk about patron questions, including lots of Wordle content: what Ben and Nicole learned from interviewing the creator of Wordle, our favourite Wordle variants such as IPA Wordle and Semantle, and comparing our Wordle solving strategies with a demo game on air.

OMG Words Preview

It's a scrabble rogue-like, which sure, why not. There are 10 rounds of single player scrabble per run, and you have a shop after each round to buy 3 kinds of bonus items. There are boss effects on some rounds. Pretty standard stuff, but it just doesn't feel good to play? I wish I had something more solid to say than that, but I really don't. I'm desperate for good word games, it's a gaming space that's really under-served, but this... just didn't work somehow. It never came together into something engaging.

Characteristics and Types of Esl Word Games!

Esl means  English as a second language. This is the context in which we will use esl in the scope of this article. These games are high fidelity to small children who are learning any language and also to senior citizens who may be suffering from degenerative neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s, etc. Esl word games can make a huge difference in the attention spans of individuals who come from different spheres and suffering from a variety of neurological conditions. The reason is because these games promote renewed interest in the topic when the majority of people have gotten bored with the usual concepts.

Therefore, Esl word games not only help to increase the vocabulary of the people but also their literacy level. Thus, they support the national cause!

Hangman: This comes     under classic esl word games     that are fun to play as well as to interact with. This game is very useful     to increase vocabulary of the children. It involves a series of     progressive steps for the children to guess a word or there will be a     progression in an image that proceeds to draw a hangman. If the image is     complete then the player loses but if the mystery word is guessed correctly     then he wins! 

PunnyFuzzle     is one of the best  ESL word games for kids as it facilitates     to improve kids’ English effectively and easily. The PunnyFuzzle offers  fun with word learning and a problem solving game that helps to improve  English vocabulary. Learning English words become easy with minimum  resources and efforts.

 Pictionary: This game     is very important because it provides a three-in-one combo of interactivity,     out-of-box thinking, and creativity. It has a fun-filled ‘learning-as-you-progress’     theme. This game tests how strong a person’s memory is as they have to     remember particular specific words. This game involves a team member to     draw multiple pictures to enable his team members to remember a word as     against another team.

Charades:  Esl     word games cannot get better then this! This game replaces actions and     gestures in place of pictures in Pictionary. This game always evokes     laughter, fun and inspiration from its target audience! The team that     guesses a word from the gestures of their own team member wins a point.     There are many teams and the team that gets the highest points wins!

once upon a time there lived a very fat man named Mycroft. He loved to eat beans and nipples. This made the man have horny gas. one day he was out of beans so he went to the his brothers flat to buy a big, kinky can of fruity brand beans. When he got to the 221 B Baker street he found that there was only one can left on the shelf and there was a vary large woman waddling her way towards the can. Mycroft illegally slid his blubbery hand up the shelf to hump the last can when all of a sudden, the salty woman's mouth opened up and started sucking the can from the shelf. Mycroft felt all his spunk being sucked towards the woman's cat like lips. the lard loving Lad and the freakishly fat lady met in a kiss. they decided to share the beans and they lived safely and normally ever after.
