Brock froze.
He should have known.
He had been stupid to think it wouldn't happen.
He had trusted you too much. Had allowed you to get too close. So close he had a taste of your lips…
“You want her to be happy right?” He didn't wait for a response, “she's there, waiting, see? All I had to do was ask her to meet me here, just like that. Don't you think it would be better for her to be seen with me or – “ he shrugged, sucking his teeth and taking a step forwards in the hall. “You know your reputation right? Former HYDRA, reformed, that means you got eyes on you at all times. That means she'll have eyes on her at all times. Think of the amount of times they'll look over her once they realize your name is attached to her. Even if it is just as friends.”
Brock's head was buzzing. He unfurled his fists, hadn't even realized he had clenched them. Stupid fucking Walker was a pain in the ass and it was rumored that he was up next for the SHIELD. He didn't think that fucking idiot would really give it up, but just the rumor alone was enough to catapult this fucker up the ladder and Brock? Brock was fucking in the dark, he would get no where good and drag you down under with him if he let it happen.
You? You deserved so much more.
More than he could give.
Walker stepped back but Brock was quicker, he had after all gone head to head with the ACTUAL fucking Captain America. “If you fucking hurt her…” he warned.
Walker huffed, “she's waiting.”
He couldn't watch.
He took one last look, still in uniform. Gloved hands clutched in front of you, eyes jumping from one face to another, searching. He had at one point come to count on having your gaze fall on him and a small smile he thought reserved just for him would find its place on your lips when you saw him.
Now? Now he couldn't watch to see you smile for him.
Brock turned and walked in the opposite direction.

Steve knew EXACTLY when he fell for you.
It wasn't during a mission where you had a tendency to follow him and Bucky. Those moments were a plus, especially when they were so used to just taking a hit and keep moving. Not that you were exactly gentle with either of them, you would grab them by the belt or collar and 'YOINK' them out of the way of danger, trusting they could keep on their feet.
Which of course they did.
It wasn't when you bet Thor you could beat him at arm wrestling.
Which was interesting. The way you hid a lighter and flicked it on under the thunder gods arm briefly, enough to startle and distract him as you threw your entire weight and muscle behind your arm to pin his down while laughing.
Parker said technically– and Wade cut in shouting that you had victory while Thor laughed brasher at your cleverness.
There was a dozen other examples he thought of briefly but dismissed quicker. No. It was simple.
Too simple.
"STEEEeeeEeeEevieee baby!" You sang, dancing around the kitchen as Bucky smirked at him, enjoying the way you shook your hips as you prepared a coffee. "Bucky… hey!"
"Y/N… c'mere," Bucky called you over.
Your eyes flicked to Steve briefly but you nodded and moved.
lt was that moment that he realized you always looked to him; during missions, briefings, one of Tony's parties… you always looked for him and his heart melted. He only noticed because he was always searching for you in those moments too.
Bucky slipped an arm around your waist and dragged you close, "found a picture for ya," he hummed, thumbing his phone screen.
You leaned down comfortable with his best friend, why wouldn't you be? "IT'S A COW!" You gasped, a smile spilling across your face in pure delight.
He had once asked you why cows? 'Why not?' You had answered before continuing, 'I've always just loved them and their cute noses… lookit their eyes and tell me a cow isn't the cutest!'
You cooed at Bucky's phone and looked up at Steve, a blush spreading across your face as Steve stared at you with an unreadable expression. "Ach! I forgot my coffee!" You exclaimed and hurried to grab it before slipping out the room with– "be good boys!"
Bucky grinned at Steve who leaned against the doorframe watching until you disappeared. "When ya gonna say something?"
Steve rolled his eyes. "Soon."
Bucky cleared his throat, "yeah? Cause she has a date with some lawyer guy."
Steve straightened, looking downright unpleased, "what lawyer guy?"
Bucky shrugged his broad shoulders, "guess Tony introduced them? Matt, something I don't know." Bucky did know. Matt Murdock the blind lawyer, technically it wasn't a date, but no one said it wasn't not a date. Plus, you were comfortable with the guy, allowing him to touch you, hug you… if Steve didn't hurry… he stood slowly and moved to leave when Steve stopped him.
"When? She told you?" Why didn't you tell him?!
Bucky blinked at him slowly and shrugged again before pulling out of his reach.
Steve pulled his phone out, pulling your text chain open, he stared at the selfie of you. You had sent it to him yesterday when you had stopped by the shop to pick up your favorite. Your coffee cup plastered against your smiling face.
A/N: here, a thing.... I want to write more for this. Idk.

It was annoying.
Brock had had a good morning, training the newest recruits, it was always fun torturing the new ones; but then those two had shown up and stolen his thunder.
Now, now- he was in a bad mood and he knew exactly who to take it out on.
He sauntered towards the desk where Y/N was always posted at, that girl had an endless smile, it never faltered.
Except when she looked at him.
It was the smallest twitch, but Brock noticed it, with a face like his he had grown accustomed to the way others stared, the mouths dropping open before their eyes skipped away. He knew people were uncomfortable with the way he looked now, he didn't give a fuck, but when she beamed at him it made him wanna…
Brock cursed under his breath, he wasn't sure what it was. He scrubbed a hand through his dark hair roughly. That feeling just under his skin, she was too small, yet those curves of hers always drew him to make some remark and she took it in stride. It bothered him.
That was it.
Y/N bothered him.
He frowned, there was an unfamiliar face behind the counter. The young man paled as he stopped right in front of him, Brocks eyes narrowed, that's right fucker, stare.
"Where's Y/N?" He demanded looking around before the guy could get a chance to answer.
"Ahhh, she… taking-"
Brock scowled at him, "spit it out," he snapped his fingers inpatiently.
The guy swallowed. "She took time off, guess she has family in town…"
Brock rolled his eyes and pushed away from the counter. Of course. Just his luck.
**
Three days.
He kept going back, but everytime he spotted the weak shit sitting behind the counter he shoved his hands into his pockets and left.
The fourth day he spotted her and his annoyance came back tenfold. Make him wait? He had four days worth of irritation built up now. It was her fault really.
Y/N was in the middle of thanking Blake, the poor guy had to cover her shifts so quickly. And he was such a good guy, easy smile, green eyes to die for. The female population found it hard to talk to the guy and he had been relieved when you had struck up conversation with him, making it easier to become friends. You had of course brought him sweets and a few gift cards promising to return the favor when he needed it.
He had mentioned some scary guy coming by to find you but there had been no name or notes left behind which confused you. "Listen, if you're in trouble let me know yeah?" He said looking at you earnestly. He wasn't sure what he could do really, but you were his friend.
"There you are."
You felt your shoulders tense, a rock settling in the pit of your stomach. This was not what you needed right at the moment. Blake paled and you turned, offering the brightest smile you could muster. "Brock!" You flashed your teeth, god you shouldn't have put on so much makeup this morning- but she had insisted you wear it and had pressed you into putting your hair up as well.
Golden honey eyes narrowed on you as he leaned over the counter, "s'matter with you?!" He demanded immediately.
You waved your hands in front of you, looking over your shoulder as you felt Blake step closer. "Thank you again!" He offered you a quick look before hurrying out from behind the counter. "Sorry, was there something I could do for you?"
Brock hated that, that smile. That was the smile you offered everyone, he paused, squinting at you as you stared at him from across the counter. "The fuck is wrong with you?" He growled out again.
It took you aback, so much so that you actually jerked back, your smile faltered. "Uhhh?"
He shook his head, scowling at you, "don't feed me some lie, you can do that with these fucking idiots, don't give me some bullshit story."
You refused to look over at your coworker, Shelly, who sat beside you, you could feel her glancing at you in curiosity. Why did he have to come the day you got back? Why did he always do this? This man was always in your space and he always let you smile and laugh it off, it worked with everyone else. Mr. Stark had stopped by and asked the same, albeit in a kinder tone which had almost broken you but…
"N-nothing!"
Brock could feel the irritation mount, it hadn't been enough that you had been out for several days making him wait, but now you was lying to him?! "Da fuck you think I am?" He demanded leaning over the counter to get a closer look, you had put on makeup, which wasn't odd, but it was heavier than usual. You never wore color on your lips, just that Carmex crap he had seen you use. Had you changed your perfume? He didn't like that. "Your hair-"
You flinched, schooling your expression, "you like it?"
"Better when you let it down."
You forced a laugh.
"You get a boyfriend?"
Your mouth fell open and your coworker squealed, "is that it?!" She cried out, "I KNEW there was something different about you!"
Brock scowled as the girl made unholy noises and interjected into his conversation with you, grabbing your hands and tugging at you.
He turned away with a sneer, of course you had gone and gotten a boyfriend. Stupid. He probably didn't even know what book you read when you thought nobody was looking.
Brock stomped away furiously, jamming his hands in his pockets.
This was bullshit.
He glanced over his shoulder as the blond questioned you, catching your gaze for a moment. The guy was probably pretty and empty headed.
A/N: I haven't sone a work drabble in a minute!! This popped up so here ya go!

Steve grinned as you bumped into him, he tugged at your ponytail laughing when you scowled at him. "You started it!" He bit back, hands held up.
You let out a whine, "but you know that when you pull on it, it makes it loose and then it doesn't look good!" You pouted at him and looked around.
"What are you looking for?"
"Now I have to go to the bathroom, there's no mirrors out here- Steve?!"
He had reached up and sank his large hands into your hair, "there," he hummed, mussing up your hair even more, "now it's worth it." Steve cracked at your shocked expression, leaning down to press a quick kiss to your cheek before he walked away laughing.
You in turn sputtered and stomped away.
Bucky took in a small breath, Steve blinking at him in confusion as his friend shook his head.
"What?"
"When ya gonna ask her out punk?"
Sam laughed from behind him, "Steve? Ask someone out? Nah that's not how it works Barnes, see…" Sam set down the weights he was using and grabbed a towel, wiping his face as he stood next to Bucky, elbow dropping on the brunette's shoulder as Steve braced himself for what was to come. Steve grabbed the weights, easily lifting them as he readied himself to ignore whatever Sam was going to say. "See, maybe back in the day Steve wasn't noticed too much, but now?" He whistled.
Bucky groaned, "don't remind me"
Sam chuckled, leaning into him, "now the girls flock to his bed night after night and what's a man to do? Turn them down? Nah uh, not this gentleman. He would never turn a lady down- sorry, dame."
Steve snorted, "you have no idea what you are talking about Sam. Y/N isn't like that. She has never once.. Indicated that she is interested in me. Plus… she's one of the guys. I like having her around, it's nice to have someone that I can talk to-THAT IS NOT in this life all the time." He dropped his head back. "Why are you guys saying this? I don't look at her like that!"
Bucky scowled, "maybe not… but ya should. There's others out there that might be quicker than you."
Steve frowned and followed Sam's line of vision once he made a face. Turning around he caught the end of Tony toying with your hair, your tie in his hand as he tucked your hair behind your ear. Steve shrugged, "so? It's just Tony…"
Sam snickered, holding onto Bucky as Steve's shoulders tensed. Tony dropped a hand on the top of your head, you reached up and paused, hands in front of you as you lifted your shoulders and smiled. Sam could see the color in your cheeks from where they stood. "Oop! You alright there Steve boy?" He asked, staring at the weight in his hand in dismay, "I was using those…"
"Ahh!" He glanced down at the twisted weight in his hand. Where had that come from? He looked back up in time to see Tony stare at you fondly, hand cupping your cheek before he let go and stepped back, smiling broadly at you.
Steve watched as you stumbled a little bit, waving at Tony with a giddy little grin before you disappeared out of sight. Why didn't you look at him like that?
"Hey guys!" Tony greeted, stepping into the gym.
"You talking with Y/N?" Steve asked, moving over. Sam glanced at Bucky who did nothing to hide his smug smirk.
Tony nodded, dropping his towel and bag onto the floor. "Yeah, she agreed to accompany me to this thing tonight. I need someone to help distract me at those boring things, you know." Tony laughed gently.
Steve stared at him at a loss for words. "A thing?"
Tony nodded, eyebrows raising and the half smile appearing, "yeah. She's cute."
"Of course she's cute!" Steve exclaimed following Tony, who stopped and looked at him quizzically. "We all know Y/N is cute. She just…" he waved his hands around.
"Thought you said she was just one of the guys?" Bucky interjected.
Steve ignored him, "so it's not a date?"
Tony huffed, turned and stared at him, "maybe it is…" he stopped and stared at Steve thoughtfully. "You know what big guy? I think I am done working out for the day. I have to get ready for the gala tonight." He clapped Steve on the arm with a smile and nodded at Bucky and Sam who stood in silence, leaving the three to their workouts.

Loki froze.
In the middle of all out battle, he was not alone. He could see Thor just out the corner of his vision. The Avengers called him friend now, teammate. And it had been a long path to get there, many months and he was still somewhat guarded.
He had put that behind him.
He had to remember, remind himself he was no longer alone.
*
She knew him.
He had changed, grown, filled out, the soft baby features of his face melting away and roughening since she had first laid eyes on him.
Yet on this planet, so far from where she had come. She knew him.
It was his eyes.
She would know him anywhere in any life, purely because of his eyes.
Those eyes hid no emotion, betraying him, eyes which had shown defiance, fear, anger, pain and finally she had seen vacant and defeated.
Those eyes.
She could never forget them.
*
He had worked to put it all behind him. Struggled to keep it locked away, snarky remarks, that infuriating smirk, sarcastic and caustic comebacks that made Tony wince. Still, they had accepted him. Loki. The lone wolf, the snake of Asgard, Thor had continued unable to give up on his brother. How could he? Thor had always been his big brother and had protected him when they were younger. They had grown apart as they grew older yes, there was no excuse for that, but it meant he loved him no less.
Loki rolled his eyes as Thor dragged him to midgard, as he forced the Avengers on him. It wasn't easy. Not with Natasha and Clint. Loki hated it. Hated looking into the blue of Clint's eyes, those sharp eyes he had used, he had taken and forced the archer to do what was needed. And it was needed. It was him or Loki would face the consequences.
Fire.
Torture.
Loki had fought it. Had held out but the pain…
The memories of it plagued him.
Often waking him in the darkness with a hand clamped over his mouth to stifle the screams. He saw the sergeant, the looks others had given him before. He did not need pity. No. Loki could not live if his brother gave him that look.
It didn't quell the looks from the green eyed assassin. He had taken her friend and hurt him. It made him cautious. She had not hesitated. She had been there the moment Clint needed her. Loki wondered what that was like? Even his brother had questioned him.
*
She had been left behind by the titan.
Left with some of his trusted commanders. Ones that continued to keep her in order. Knowing the chaos and destruction she could wreak if left unattended.
And they had come here to find out if it was true.
And it was true.
Thanos had been defeated.
*
He woke in the quiet of the night, swallowing the cry that threatened to escape. Swallowing the feel of liquid fire, hands dragging down his back, leaving behind wretched marks he covered with magic. Had it not been torment he might have sworn it was the touch of lover. Hands trailing over his body, touching him in ways he could not remember anyone else doing so. Leaving behind scars as a reminder of his time with the titan. All to break him, all to make him do his bidding.
And it had worked.
Torture came in the form of a single individual, one that derived glee from his pain, fed off his fear and was quicker to deal it out than it took Thanos to utter the words. Thanos’ number one when it came to torture, she was one that made Loki’s every breath one he regretted. A single touch from her had him crying out in pain and she had touched every inch of skin at the behest of the tyrant, continuing until he broke.
And she was here now.
Here on Midgard.
*
Thor saw the change in his brother's demeanor, he didn't understand it; shock, fear, confusion and finally anger settled on Loki’s face, Thor had not seen his brother move so quickly in years. What was this change in his brother when he normally kept so cool? This battle was no different than any other they had taken part in, there was a villain to defeat, enemies to battle.
The woman was a surprise, he had missed her, though she was working her way towards Loki with determination. He cried out to the captain, making a path to follow Loki as his brother disappeared and reappeared before the female. His strikes were unflinching, the woman falling back as the asgardian attacked relentlessly, using her control of fire to deflect Loki’s attacks.
Thor hesitated, he had trained with Loki, had watched him grow into a formidable warrior as he had. Thor had come to trust in him even before it all went wrong.
And Thor understood, there were things you did not speak of, things Loki kept close and guarded even now after all these years. He knew his brother woke in the dark of the night, keeping his cries to himself. He had quietened the others knowing his brother would hate any sympathy.
He watched as Loki yelled, driving the fire wielder back, his breath catching as he saw a ripple of blue shift over his brother's skin. His brother with the blood of the frost giants coursing through him. This woman had to deserve the anger, the rage, his brother threw at her. Thor would not question him but he needed to understand. Why? What had she done?
*
Thanos was everything. She had learned the hard way to do his bidding and now, now it was her turn to teach another to do what her lord wanted.
He didn’t look like much honestly, one that Thanos had saved from certain death and he wanted nothing to do with his plans. Thanos knew this one had been to the terrestrial planet, he knew those that defended it.
She watched as he took the young man's face into his large hand, forcing him to meet his gaze.
“No.”
He denied Thanos.
Over and over again he denied him.
Over and over again she was forced to make him scream.
And yet he still uttered the word.
So, when the day came, when he could no longer whimper the word, when she stepped towards him and he could not even flinch-
“You will do my bidding.”
“...yes…” he answered, voice cracking as Thanos grinned.
She closed her eyes.
She could not freely witness this.
And before they took him, she reminded him of his promise.
*
Perhaps he could come to understand it if Loki were willing to talk, but that was on him. What Thor could do now in this moment was guard his brother’s back as he should have done before. As he had before. Perhaps this would help, Thor could possibly come to understand him once again.
Perhaps his brother could finally heal.
*
She deflected his strikes and he saw the recognition in her eyes. Eyes that were wholly black, yellow circling red, molten lava.
She came back at him, fire clashing with the freezing cold of his magic. He moved faster, splitting himself into multitudes, magic rippling like she had never seen it.
He was beautiful. She had known then. His attacks were methodical, quick, precise. Perhaps in another life it could have been different between them.
A pain arched through her as she stepped back unable to keep up with his movements. She had been so in awe she had missed him, missed seeing his move, and he had used her distraction to slip behind her as his clones continued to attack from in front.
"And here I have you.." His voice seethed with venom sinking into her skin as she fell back into him.
She remembered him.
Out of all the ones she had been ordered to torture. This one, the one she knew she would face again and it had been surprising when she had been brought to this planet, this place of water, and yet she was to fight and do as told. And when she had laid eyes on him, when his graceful figure came out of the world's defending team… She knew what it meant.
And relief swamped her.
This was the end.
She gasped as he drove his dagger deeper into her back, the pain making her flinch, her fire fluttering. "Imagine then… the pain I was in to put you through that torture. Your hell was only a fraction of what I felt and yet…"
Loki wanted nothing but to feel hate, let his rage for this woman boil over, no sympathy for the one that was caressed and praised by the titan when she made him scream.
She reached back, fingers catching the back of his neck. The touch making him flinch with the memories it brought. Yet, there was no pain. Her fire had been savagely cut short as he drove his weapon into her. He had done it. He had caught her.
The memory of his promise for revenge slipping through his mind. She had smiled then, "I look forward to it" she had answered him then, continuing on, dragging screams from him, earning his ire. "Remember the feel of my touch and keep your promise."
He ground his teeth as she sagged against him. "No.." He growled, denying what her words meant.
It wasn't true.
It wasn't- he shook his head. She had done it. She had made him writhe and beg, made him curse her existence. She had driven him into darkness and brought him back to consciousness only to tip him into the edge of madness.
Because of her his brother watched him carefully. She had done all of it.
Hadn't she?
He had no empathy for the one that had made his life nothing but hell. Loki staggered back as her knees gave out and he caught her in his arms. She weighed nothing.
"And yet here you are… a merciful being" she sighed offering him a weak smile, her head falling on his shoulder. "Just as I thought you were"
"Be quiet!" He demanded, rage giving, no. He hated her. She deserved his hatred.
"I do. I deserve it. Your hatred. Let me take it with me," her eyes caught his gaze, "this I can do for you for your kindness."
The wave of emotion coursing through him was enough to knock the air from his lungs. She had tortured him. Freely.
Thanos had told her to.
It was her reason for being.
To do as the titan wanted. Her lord. She followed him.
"Loki-"
His name was a soft exhale from her lips.
It shook him. The way her body relaxed in his arms. Her eyes slipping shut. He had his revenge. He had wanted this, from the moment she had first touched him.
Every single time her fingers had fluttered over his skin had been at the behest of the tyrant, until he had broken.
A roar of denial burned his throat, his soul shattering as he clutched her shoulders in his hands. Hands that had stopped her breath.
All because of the one that had taken them and bent them to his will.
*
Thor felt it, a shift in the air, the ripple of magic he had come to know. The feeling not unlike when one felt the presence of another. More of a memory, the sound of silent footsteps, the shift in the air when one entered the room.
Like their mother.
"Loki-” he sucked in a quick breath moving quickly and catching the Captain, blocking him from the sudden and violent blast of magic that felled those of the enemy close by.
With the battle around them coming to an end, Thor left the captain, needing to be by his brother, to aid him in any way.
And it seemed that the magical outburst from Loki had taken the majority of the enemies out. It was here, it was her; this woman that lay unmoving, head in Loki's lap, had been the one to bring all of this.
Summary: a quiet discussion of music, gender, and potatoes.
WARNINGS: Fluff. Mentions of an abusive past. (if you squint hard enough)
He stared as you stood by the oven, hip resting against the counter, the kitchen light set low, phone in your hand as you flicked your fingers over it. You wore his shirt, legs exposed, bare feet against the kitchen's wooden flooring, hair tucked up in a mess, and God you still took his breath away.
When you had snuck out of bed had been a mystery to him, but he should have become accustomed to that. After two years of being together you still managed to surprise him. Steve smiled softly as your phone began to play music, a soft chorus humming into the air as you leaned forwards staring into the oven. He wondered what you were making?
You hissed quickly setting the phone down, as a hand moved to your belly and he moved without thinking. It didn't surprise him that your hand wrapped around his throat when he suddenly appeared beside you, his own hands held up. He stood still, watching as your eyes studied his face before you let go with a sheepish apology.
Some things didn't change.
"I didn't mean that," you muttered ashamed.
Steve hummed, "it's alright," he answered brushing it off. He knew your past, had helped you work through it. You watched as he knelt down, "hey buddy, wanna take it easy on yer ma?" You blinked as he cooed, large hands warm and soothing.
"She demanded baked potato…"
"Baked potato and is this…?"
"Tchaikovsky's hymn of the cherubim," you sighed as he stared up at you, "she doesn't like it tonight."
Steve chuckled quietly as he stood, "you mean he?" He asked as he pulled you forwards into his body.
Rolling your eyes you let him, "maybe a change in music?" Squirming till you could reach your phone, Steve pressed himself completely against you, his body heat seeping into you as you flicked through your music library and found something, "she," you cleared your throat, as a rhythmic stomping filled the air and Steve dropped his head to your shoulder as a guitar tore through the air, "likes System of a Down like a good girl."
"Will we always argue about this?"
You turned your head, tilting your face up into his and smiling into the kiss. Steve was quick to press his hips into yours, hands moving to your waist as he deepened the kiss. "Ow!" He jerked back as you bit his bottom lip.
You stifled a laugh, "there's a baked potato-" the oven chimed interrupting you.
Steve grunted as you elbowed out of his arms and grabbed the oven mitts. He took your space and leaned against the counter, watching as you pulled out a tray with three balls of foil on it.
"She wanted baked potato and I figured you'd wake up and…" you peeked over your shoulder at him, a little look of embarrassment crossing your features for a moment, "thought you might want to join us?"
"For baked potatoes?!" He grinned broadly as you plated them up, "fuck yes!"
It worked, the smile that produced nearly knocked him off his feet. "Let me-"
"I'm pregnant, not invalid!" You pouted at him waddling over to the fridge, he watched as you pulled out butter, chives, and sour cream. "You stuff your own potato!"
Steve laughed, wrapping his hand around your neck making you pause for a moment and look up at him. "Love you."
Summary: Stopping for coffee & scones leads to a little bit of romantic fiction.
A/N: so, the work drabble i am currently workin on is a bit stressful and i needed something fluffy before I continue that. SO HERE YA GO!!!! Hope y’all enjoy it.
*******
You had a problem.
At least that's what you were told.
"Stop living in your head! Those stories aren't real- get out and find a real person to love. Jesus fucking christ!"
It's not that you didn't know what separated your reality and fiction. You knew the novels you choose to hide in were fiction. It was your job, working at a book publishing house. And there were lots of books that didn't make the cut and there were some that were published. Some didn't deserve it, others did. It was a shame.
But you did your job well and it paid well.
You frowned as you moved up the line. "Order for Y/L/N," you said, stuffing your debit card into the reader with a huff.
There was a snort from your right and you glanced over.
This was the problem, you thought as you forced your eyes away from the tall blond that smiled at you.
Love. Instant love.
You romanticized everything.
Here for instance. In the story you would brush hands with this stranger and there would be a spark… you shifted to your left foot, scowling at the machine that was currently asking for you to remove your card and try again.
Three attempts later and you handed your card to the cashier with a small moan of apology.
"Y/N…" the brunette you knew as Rebecca whispered quietly, motioning for you to lean closer, "your card was declined."
"WHAT?!" you hissed, "oh! Sorry, not…" you shook your head seeing her expression, "that's on me. I-" you pulled out your wallet and set it on the counter, searched through it, looking up at her with sadness. "I guess," you shrugged, hands waving around, "cancel my order. I have to go to the bank now I guess."
She nodded and offered you a quick smile. "No, hey, add it to mine. No one should go without coffee."
You looked over, the blonde grinned crookedly at you. "It's okay. It wasn't just coffee."
He shrugged, "blueberry muffin?" He guessed narrowing bright blue eyes at you.
Too calculating, you thought under his scrutiny. "It's fine. Rebecca, just- please just cancel and I'll see you in a few days?"
She handed you the coffee, "Barton says he'll pay then at least take the coffee. He's a human mess but a good guy."
"I resent that Becca," he growled, moving closer and pressing against you as he reached over the counter to swipe at her. She danced away with a cackle. "Give her the sweets too," he grabbed the box, smirking at you, and shoved them into your hands. "Scones? And a full box. I like that,” he shot you a quick wink.
You stood there a moment. Blue eyed, blond haired, big muscly armed hunk. Yeah, ohhhkay, definite makings of a romantic novel. You needed to say something, now, NOW cause you were making this awkward by NOT saying anything and just staring at him. "THANK YOU!" you felt your neck heat as his eyebrows shot up in surprise and he laughed. Perfect teeth. "Sorry, I.. Wh-what? Uhm, thank you!"
You dreamt too much.
With that thought you all but sprinted out of the cafe. You needed to get to the bank and figure out what went wrong with your account and how could you be declined? You were positive this was a mix up, you had just checked your account before leaving and had plenty so, how could you be declined?!
You stopped. Your card. Your wallet.
Turning around you screamed as you came face to face with blondie. Barton. Rebecca had called him Barton.
Strong big hands caught your upper arms and righted you as he held onto you. "You okay?" He asked with concern as you shivered.
You nodded swallowing the embarrassment from seeing the guy that had completely made you forget-- "MY WALLET!"
He held it up with a smile. "You left so quickly Becca hadn't even realized you hadn't taken your card back and since she technically couldn't leave-"
You stared at him, "and you actually came to give me my card."
"She said your bank was right up here."
You nodded, "I probably share waaaayyyyy too much of my personal info."
"I think we all do that on occasion," he chuckled.
You nodded as he handed you the wallet. "Thank you." Long lean fingers brushed yours and you noticed a few bandaids and a couple bruises. No electricity or spark, still a girl could dream, you sighed.
"Maybe we'll see each other again?" He offered.
You nodded, "I don't know your name?"
"Clint, uhh, Barton. Sorry about Becca, she's just teasing me cause I teach archery to the kids and her nephew is in the class-"
"Kids?" You asked, "archery?"
He chuckled and you liked that, you liked that a lot. No, no romanticizing, guy probably had a girlfriend, just look at those arms, "oh! Archery! Thats why."
His brows came together as he shifted from foot to foot, hand rubbing at the back of his neck, "sorry?"
"Big arms." You explained nodding.
He stared at you for a moment blinking, then a slow smile slid in place as he ducked his head and then looked at you shyly, "my arms?"
"Big...oh- tha-that's… you have large bice-…" jesus could you stop?! "Large… biceps and triceps, very...fit. Gawd!!" no, apparently you could not stop. You turned on your heel and walked. It was best. You needed to just disappear.
"Y/N!!!"
You turned, how did he-?
"YOU'RE REALLY CUTE AND I CAN'T WAIT TO BUY YOU COFFEE AGAIN!!"
You laughed, eyes shutting in pleasure briefly as he backed away waving at you. You managed to balance your coffee atop your scones and waved back.
Yeah, you dreamt too much. Maybe you hid in your books and fiction a little more than normal. But, was it so bad to dream a little while having coffee and scones?
